Today is #oceanexplorationday! On this day in 1960, Jacques Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh were the first to reach a record depth of approximately 10,911 meters (35,797 ft) in the research bathyscaphe Trieste in the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific.

For #oceanexplorationday, here's a look at the history of science on ships. Once used as scientific instruments themselves, ships eventually became floating laboratories. As their vessels changed, life and work for scientists at sea changed as well.
