#Oemleria, the local spring harbinger, is blooming late this year. These dioecious plants produce fruits with a refreshing cucumber/watermelon flavor & are an early pollinator nectar source.

I love seeing plants sprouting bright new growth and flowers blooming this time of year. I'm not sure, but I think this bush with buds opening into new leaves and blossoms is an Indian plum (Oemleria cerasiformis). #BlueSkyArtShow #Openings #ColorADay #GreenSat #Plants #Spring #Photography #ECK
A close-up of what is likely an Indian plum (Oemleria cerasiformis) branch in early spring. At the end of the branch are fresh, unfurling leaves and a cluster of pale green drooping flower buds. One small, five-petaled white flower has fully opened near the center. The background is a soft, out-of-focus mix of deep green foliage and dappled light, making the bright spring growth stand out.

Oemleria is another endemic, monotypic genus of #Rosaceae #Amygdaloideae from western North America. Oemleria cerasiformis is dioecious, & its flowers are said to be foul-smelling & fly pollinated. Not exactly "a rose by any other name...." #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

Osoberry (Oemleria cerasiformis) - one of my favorite natives.

It was a staple food of native American people of the pacific northwest.

Osoberry at Ridgefield NWR. One of the harbingers of Spring, this native shrub has a distinctive odor, which some like, and some do not 👋🏻. When fully ripe and plum-colored the stony fruits can be eaten and are said to be mildly sweet.

Osoberries (Oemleria cerasiformis) in varying stages of ripeness. They turn dark purple when fully ripe. They are edible but don't have much flesh on the pit.

A branch of an osoberry shrub is has several stems of osoberries hanging like cherries below the green oval leaves. Their color varies from greenish yellow to apricot yellow to peach pink. They look like miniature apricots at the end of the red stems, which seem even brighter red when the berries turn purple.

One of my favorite trees, a craggy old pacific crabapple, made huggable by moss. Sometimes delicate slime molds appear in the moss, on threadlike stems like lacewing eggs. It hunkers under conifers and bigleaf maples, and has an Oemleria huddled beneath it.

A gnarled, densely twisty crabapple's branches are entirely covered by thick mats of temperate rainforest mosses. It makes a verdant contrast with the grey sky.

#Bellingham #Forests 2025, Day 61: Osoberry or Indian Plum, Oemleria cerasiformis, is the first understory shrub to leaf out in spring. It's also the first shrub to flower, so it will appear again in this series before long.
