I have great memories of the 200th. OpSail on the Hudson was spectacular. 🎆
The 250th could have been too.

Personal favorite: OpSail. A fleet of tall ships sailing into New York City harbor, 212 of them.

Led by our Coast Guard ship, Eagle, which Dad and I got to tour. The pride we felt.

As someone who was 10 years old in 1976, my tears are real.

Where’s OpSail? Where’s the Freedom Train (don’t answer that. Don’t wanna know. Facial recognition alone, no). Where’s the global congratulations and celebration.

250 is a BFD. We shouldn’t have to suffer it under this… whatever this is.

50 yrs ago then rigged as brigantine Phoenix raced across the Atlantic to join New York Opsail 76 for USA Bicentennial, & raced back. Irish flag but British Master along with most "trainees"
Met a TV/film superstar today at Charlestown, Cornwall.

This is the Phoenix. She has starred in 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Poldark, Outlander, Hornblower, In the Heart of the Sea, Mansfield Park, Amazing Grace, Napoleon, Doctor Who, and far too many others to list...

In honor of us rebranding as the Keel Brothers. Here’s photos from New York City’s Parade of Ships in 2012. Photos include the John J. Harvey fire boat, the USCGC Eagle, the Pride of Baltimore 2, and of course, the Statue of Liberty. #paradeofships #opsail #sailing #shipspotting #newyorkcity

Yep, I remember it well. The only thing I would add is the sailing of the tall ships. OpSail '76 was amazing!

I was 19 years old living in Brooklyn in 1976 and saw OpSail from the Brooklyn shore near the Verrazzano.
It was great to see many of the same ships from 50 years ago still looking beautiful.
The only difference was 50 years ago (pre-9/11) the river was also filled with sightseeing & private boats.

From the perspective of a Sweet 16 in the suburbs, the 1976 #Bicentennial was magical. The Country was still reeling from Vietnam & Watergate. Nobody had any money, but everyone seemed to be all-in for a sappy, patriotic party. Operation Sail was truly awe-inspiring! opsail.org/past-events/...

Nice Norfolk night for a chill ride before the OPSAIL / Harborfest / Juneteenth chaos downtown.

Today a friend asked if I had any photos of the Norfolk OpSail 2000 tall ship event. Kinda random … but yes, I do! But not of ships, of these three cadets I adopted for the weekend. This is us at the Norfolk Naval Base touring a carrier back when you could get on base.

They are doing a huge naval review next July 4th! In conjunction with OpSail!

Why are you making the boat people march around!

And the Freedom Train. Displays included Abe Lincoln’s beaver tall hat. Went to Columbus opsail Boston. Will be in Boston again on July 13!

I remember as well. I also remember Opsail 2000, I worked at South Street Seaport Museum in NYC! No patriotic feelings this year. Zero!

They were at a bus stop far from the harbor, trying to read a bus route map. I pulled over and asked if I could help. “We want to see the beach.” Here is the first stop of our adventure.

A bit blindsided by how bittersweet today is as a long-time emigrant from #USA250. #Scaramucci reminded me of #OpSail-- the tall ships that came for #USA200. My Boston parents took me to see them. My VT mom took me to the town parade & the fireworks www.nytimes.com/1976/03/01/a...

I forgot about the tricorner hats.
The street vendors at OpSail on the Hudson River were busy selling all sorts of memorabilia.

I have an embossed 1776-1976 silver plated cake server. I need to polish it before the 4th.

#NewYorkCity #TallShips #OpSail #Bicentennial from 16 international Navies , which included 2 USSR training vessels, sent square-rigged ships to sail up #HudsonRiver with hundreds of smaller vessels from around the world.

NYC closed West Side Hwy for NY photo takers

It was glorious

OpSail ‘76, the Freedom Train, first real commemorative quarters, the emblem absolutely everywhere, a sense of true community & national pride, international congratulations & celebration of our birthday.

Man, that was a great time to be 10 years old.

This year feels like the antithesis of that.
