I want to share a story about my great grandma, Minnie Mae Moore. This is a really bad picture so you can't see the bead work around the ribbon work on my skirt and shawl that well. This is from when I served as the 1998 American Indian Exposition Princess for the Otoe-Missouria tribe.

It's a good day to be Otoe-Missouria! Today the tribe broke ground on a small #landback victory!

Indigenous garden serves as next step in reconciliation for Otoe-Missouria Tribe
A few years ago, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe was welcomed back to its ancestral lands in Nebraska. A new milestone being unveiled soon aims to continue that reconciliation.

On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we recognize that St. Louis sits on the ancestral lands of the Chickasaw Nation, Illini Tribe, Ioway Tribe, Kickapoo Tribe, Osage Nation, Otoe-Missouria Tribe, & Quapaw Nation.

The US must reckon with its colonial past & honor Indigenous leaders shaping a more just future.

Walking in the Footsteps of Our Ancestors (Ahadada Wathigre Hįnéwi Ke), is a collab between the Center for Great Plains Studies & the Otoe-Missouria. The goal is help the Otoe-Missouria reconnect with our ancestral homelands in Southeast Nebraska & educate folks about our history on those lands.

The Otoe-Missouria lived for centuries in what is now SE Nebraska. During the 1800s, the federal government coerced them to give up their land. In 1854, the tribe ceded its remaining 3,125 square miles west of the Missouri River and were moved to a reservation along the Big Blue River.

Hopping on my soapbox for a moment because there's something that bugs me about how social media has changed the way we behave towards each other.

I grew up Otoe-Missouria and Choctaw. I grew up in a BIG lovely but often dysfunctional family. I grew up in both rural and urban Oklahoma.

Stares in what the hell is this shitty AI but also stares in Otoe-Missouria and Choctaw who still have their history, culture, languages and are still FUCKIN' Here, despite centuries of genocidal policies and the best efforts of one of the world's "greatest" superpowers attempts to eradicate us.

Which infers to me that because I am an Otoe-Missouria and Choctaw woman, because I come from communities with their own languages, traditions and cultures....that I am not people, not human unless I sever that connection to my identity, languages, traditions and cultures.

You can't be an expert on Indigenous people as Non-Natives when you can't ever fully understand what it is to be Otoe-Missouria or Choctaw because you can't live it, experience the physical, emotional, psychological & spiritual aspects of who we are, our histories, connections to the land and water.

It's our unique and creative perspectives, it's our artistry.....quite literally our hands.

It doesn't matter if I draw spongebob or glue a shoe to a canvas... it's Native art. I am Otoe-Missouria and Choctaw.....quite literally a Native artist.

Yes...for example, Johnnie is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation. Johnnie, a Choctaw and Otoe-Missouria woman. Johnnie is Choctaw and Otoe-Missouria. A Choctaw woman is cool beans.

When I was in Nebraska, we scouted this location for the mural as part of the Walking in the Footsteps of our Ancestors Project. I am just in awe of how beautiful it turned out. If you're in Lincoln, Nebraska stop by the Lincoln Indian Center to see it in person.
