On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we recognize that St. Louis sits on the ancestral lands of the Chickasaw Nation, Illini Tribe, Ioway Tribe, Kickapoo Tribe, Osage Nation, Otoe-Missouria Tribe, & Quapaw Nation.

The US must reckon with its colonial past & honor Indigenous leaders shaping a more just future.

“This is the route of my forefathers,” Ioway Chief Na’je Nine impressed upon U.S. officials in 1837. “We have the history. We have always owned this land. It is what bears our name.”
An Ioway map drawn in 1837 offers a treasure trove of historical insight - Little Village
The Báxoje (Ioway) leaders Na’je Nine (No Heart of Fear) and Ñiyu Mañi (Moving Rain) arrived in Washington D.C. at the end of September 1837 with two sheets of paper, stitched together by hand — caref...

As someone who was born and raised in a state, Iowa, named after a people, Ioway (Baxoje), my answer is: No, I never learned from an Indigenous teacher or school leader.

This is a terrible loss.

Here is another paper Lance wrote that traces some of his journey back to Iowa and his relationship with the state.

I have a friend in the Ioway Nation. She told me that when someone in the tribe dies they say that they "walked on." When her son died, I learned that they have a belief that the Milky Way is all the souls of the dead walking together on their journey.

On this day, it would be a good thing for people in Iowa and surrounding prairie states to read (or read again) this essay by Báxoje (Ioway) Elder Lance Foster, who passed away last year far too soon.

And while im back on my bullshit. "Our ancestors came to America for a better life."

Who's ancestors?

Mine came for the cheap land. Was it a better life? I have no idea what their lives were like in the homeland. I know one side bought land the railroad stole from people of the Ioway tribe.
