Overwriter or underwriter?
For Queen of Thorns, I was an underwriter. Had to add a few chapters quite far into the editing process. Jay-Jay was kind of irritated.

Yup. Not every parameter is a useful one to track for every writer! For me, I'm such a massive overwriter-then-trimmer that wordcount is literally useless as a measure of progress. Like 20-40% of those words won't be there in the final draft!
There's nothing wrong with feeling good about hitting a massive word count in a short period of time, and bragging about it because you're pumped. Good for you!
But if you see someone doing this and feel bad about your own process, don't. Word count isn't the measure of worth.

I’ve recently had a discussion about this, I believe every writer is either an overwriter or an underwriter and everyone is just fighting opposite issues 😅

One advantage to being an overwriter who cuts back is that a huge part of revision is just removing all the bad parts. More than half the time a paragraph is already pretty good, once you clean all the grime and barnacles and rust and shit off it.

As an overwriter, I know I should spend less time describing visuals. It's part of why the aliens in Lonely Ship are recognisable fantasy monsters, and we don't see any super weird ones. Also why they usually wear uniforms! But I do indulge when the scene is a special one. 🧵

As an overwriter, I know I should spend less time describing visuals. It's part of why the aliens in Lonely Ship are recognisable fantasy monsters, and we don't see any super weird ones. Also why they usually wear uniforms! But I do indulge when the scene is a special one. 🧵
