From Star Struck

“She’s still tight with Agnes and Owney. Not that it should make any difference. Most of the casino guys had their eyes on Havana when I left. Hot Springs is a pissy little pond by comparison.”

The ghost of Owney should show up in the White House and do some serious hauntin’

One of the surprises of the Postal Museum in DC involves a dog named Owney. As you walk in there’s a statue. Inside you see a display about how he’d board postal trains in the 1890s and pick up tags and medals for his collar. And then you get out of a replica train, and there’s Owney. Stuffed.
Bronze statue of Owney, the Postal Service mascot, at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC. Display for Owney the dog at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, including a photo of the dog with mail train workers, and a few of the tags they gave him. It reads: Owney’s Tags “Owney… now wears a big bunch (of tags). When he jogs along, they jingle like the bells on a junk wagon.” — Brooklyn Daily Eagle, April 6, 1894 As Owney traveled the country, mail clerks and others added tags to his collar. These trinkets showed the many different places and people Owney visited. Some tags were made just for him. Over the years, Owney received hundreds of tags. From time to time, postal employees would remove his new tags and set them aside to make room for more. After Owney’s death, many of the tags were sent to the Post Office Department in Washington, DC. They are now kept in the National Postal Museum. Owney, stuffed and preserved with his vest full of tags at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC. The placard reads: "Owney acknowledges no master save about 100,000 United States postal clerks throughout the length and breadth of this land." Washington Post, December 27, 1895 Owney As a pup, Owney followed his owner to work at the post office in Albany, New York. When his master left that job, Owney stayed behind, following mailbags onto train cars. Soon he had thousands of friends among America's Railway Mail Service clerks. So many people added tags to Owney's collar that Postmaster General John Wanamaker had a harness made to help him carry the weight. After Owney died in 1897, his mail clerk friends raised money to preserve their mascot. Owney, Mascot of the Railway Service, marker in the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C. It reads: In his day, Owney (about 1888-1897) was the most famous dog in America, celebrated for traveling the length and breadth of the country on mail trains. His career began when he followed some mailbags onto a train in Albany, New York, and after that, he never stopped moving. Clerks working on Railway Mail Service cars loved having Owney on board and adopted him as their mascot. Reporters began to write about Owney, and by the early 1890s he appeared in headlines from the San Francisco Call to the New York Times. At that time, most of the nation's mail was sorted and moved on trains. Railway accidents were common and the clerks' jobs dangerous. Clerks considered Owney a good luck charm because they believed that he had never been in a train wreck. To mark Owney's trips on their trains, the clerks began adding medals and tags to his collar.

Today, I learned about one of the saddest assassinations in American history: Owney, the mascot of the Railway Mail Service. He was such a good boy.

I hope Ralph Lauren has a postal uniform fit for Owney, the Mascot of the Railway Mail Service, whose 130-odd-year-old stuffed self is in the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in DC.

Hard to think of anything with a lower global want-to-see factor than a biopic of a bloke associated with American sport. I presumed Madden was either a gaslighting psycho-thriller or the story of Leeds-born gangster Owney Madden who ran the Cotton Club. Both films I'd rather watch.

🧵Owen Madden was born in Somerset Court, Leeds in 1891 to Irish parents. Also known as Owney Madden and nicknamed "The Killer," after emigrating to the US he developed a fearsome reputation among street gangs and within the world of organised crime in the Hell's Kitchen area

We're planning on watching The Cotton Club this weekend. The owner, Irish American gangster, Owney Maddens (played by Bob Hoskins) was born in Leeds & spent time in Wigan & Liverpool, & moved to the US at age 11.
He apparently spoke with a Northern English accent all his life. Quite hard to imagine.
