#SFFChat Intro

I'm Rebecca, and I'm mother, author, artist, and a master plantser (spelled correctly).

Fellow pansters, if you get stuck, tab down to a new page and bullet point the highlights you want to reach and why you're stuck. That hole ain't as deep as it looks.

People love to talk about pansters vs. plotters like its some binary. But I'm very much in the middle. I will plot with the full knowledge the end story will look nothing like the outline.

I am basically trying to solve a constantly morphing puzzle.

Tell us the truth. Did you KNOW about the plot twist or did the plot twist surprise you too? 🤭 #writingcommunity #plotters #pansters #writingmemes

My best advice is to plan because it really does help prevent it. However, since a lot of y'all are pansters, my second best advice is not to force it. If words aren't flowing, frustrating yourself by forcing it isn't going to help. Go for a walk and stop thinking about it.

Definitely pansters--well Janet is a planner, but I jumped ahead on things constantly, ha ha! We wrote TWINLESS without an outline, but did brainstorm the plot together. We ended up outlining as each chapter was finished, to find any plot holes and find timing issues. #writing #authorlife
If you're a panster and you think your structural edits would be so much lighter if you could plan first, let me put your mind at ease! It won't. I'm a massive planner and I just had to rewrite a very saggy 100page middle 😭

There are organized writers, planners, pansters...

Then there's me.

Definitely a chaos writer.

I apologize to any future readers.

Vacillating between doomscrolling & procrasticleaning cuz, well ::gestures vaguely at the US::

One thing I can do is freely share what little I've learned about the writing craft over the years.

I hope it helps someone.

Boy, do I! Please let me introduce you to reverse outlines, my favorite tool for novels. Unless you write an outline and then completely stick to it, reverse outlines are magic. My #RevPit winner will be doing one, and so do most clients. #AskEditor

I really don't know how y'all do it. Writing without a plan feels so paralyzing to me, but some of you are out here spinning gold out of straw.

For all you pansters, please tell us, how do you do it?

I honestly don't know how you pansters do it. How do you start with an idea and some characters and just find a novel along the way?

I am 100% a plotter and it seems my homeschooled 4th grader is a PANSTER! Trying to teach her the prewriting process and it is like pulling teeth. Girl just wants to jump in and I'm like "we need a plan!"

Pansters help! How do you do this?

"pansters" tend to write without outlines and a general idea of the story, while "plotters" typically create a chapter by chapter outline... I'm definitely trying to get into plotting though, less backtracking that way 😅

Gotta go with the other pansters. I start with a general idea of the theme, but my characters come up with something better along the way.
As an example, I thought my latest sci-fi story was all about an old lady beating up pirates, but it's really about what we give to the generations after us.
December 19, 2023 at 10:53 PM
There's a time in most pansters' stories when they've set their project aside for a week or two, only to have the pieces fall into place later, and reveal a larger picture.

The mischievous laughter following these revelations is a sound protagonists should dread.

I don't believe in the binary aspect either; I think we're all on a spectrum.

That said, I liked the version I heard in the UK: gardeners or architects, over pansters and plotters.
