Found quite a few of these unusual looking wasps last week in France, which I think are Dryinus collaris (Dryinidae). They parasitise Issus sp (planthopper), and given how many of those I found, they're not short of hosts!! #Hymenoptera #ParasiticWasp #Dryinidae #Ardennes #France

On 28-Mar Graham Moates & I found a few Melanagromyza moatesi puparia, a species of fly discovered by and named after Graham in 2019. Today this smart parasitic wasp emerged from one. I think it keys to Sphegigaster but I can't find a key to species (S. nigricornis has been recorded from moatesi).
Puparium of Melanagromyza moatesi in a broken-open stem of Hemp Agrimony. Like many puparia in this family the puparium is a cylindrical yellowish structure. A key identification feature on this one is the pair of hook-shaped horns at one end. #Diptera #Agromyzidae #UKDiptera Face of the parasitic wasp ready to emerge from the puparium. I've been keeping an eye out for an adult fly (or wasp) in the pot but today (for the first time in several days) I had a closer look. Was I extremely lucky to catch this just before it emerged or had it got stuck and potentially been like this for a while? #pupa #puparium #parasite Adult parasitic wasp having emerged (with a little help from me) from the puparium, ventral view. I think it keys to genus Sphegigaster (I need to double-check a few things when it slows down) but I don't have a key to species in this subfamily. A metallic green wasp. The head and thorax can be seen to be strongly pitted in contrast to the gaster which is shiny and smooth.
