The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) has been described as a dying party amid party leaders resigning and internal squabbles. This comes after Oshana and Ohangwena regional branch administrator Ingashipola Lucas resigned from the party last week. He did so in a letter dated 30 April addressed to Joseph Uapingene, the party’s current secretary general. Not long ago, former party secretary general Joseph Kauandenge also resigned from his position and opted to be an ordinary member. Political analyst Sakaria Johannes believes Nudo is slowly dying, and if the party does not address its issues immediately, it will lose votes in November’s regional and local authority elections. “When you see people leaving the party or resigning from positions and they are top leaders, you must know the party is dying. Nudo is in that boat now,” he says. Johannes says when leaders leave parties they take along their supporters. Political commentator Ndumba Kamwanyah says it would take a visionary leader to revive the party. “As things stand currently, the writing is on the wall. The party is dead, unfortunately,” he says. Kamwanyah says November’s elections will be the last nail in the party’s coffin unless drastic steps are taken. Nudo secretary general Joseph Uapingene yesterday promised to provide comment tomorrow, as the party was due to hold an urgent meeting yesterday. Lucas, in his resignation letter said he is resigning “with a heavy heart”. “Additionally, I hereby withdraw my candidacy for the upcoming regional and local authority elections scheduled for November 2025,” the letter reads. Lucas became a member of Nudo in 2021, but is resigning “due to cultural shock and ongoing internal conflict”, he said. He said these challenges have taken a personal toll on him and have led him to conclude that stepping away is in the best interests of both himself and the party. During the party’s elective congress in July 2024, former Namibia Football Association secretary general Barry Rukoro claimed he was a Nudo member and intended to vie for the party’s presidency, but the party denied his membership and barred him from participating in the congress.
