You do not hate pastoralists nearly enough
July 18, 2025 at 11:15 PM
Fucking pastoralists, man.
August 26, 2026 at 2:26 PM
man how deep do you have to be on the racism to have an opinion on whether or not people are pastoralists

Meanwhile, nomadic pastoralists live and die by a specific kind of inheritable property (livestock) and have extreme rates of death by violence

So almost all nomadic pastoralists are intensely patriarchal

Where my pastoralists at?

And of course we should note that hunter-gatherers are not the only alternative to agriculture.

There are also pastoralists, like the famously peaceful Mongols and Huns. Some of those groups also lack individual ownership of land, which doesn't for a moment stop them from doing war. end/

The Tuareg are a Berber ethnic group who have lived in Niger for centuries. They are traditionally nomadic pastoralists who have a unique culture that blends Berber, Arab, and Indigenous traditions.

Living with drought has taught pastoralists lessons the world needs

Half a billion pastoralists draw on generations of knowledge to thrive on rangelands. They say protecting their way of life would help others prepare for a hotter, drier world.

I think that technology will have to save us.

Because the people definitely won't.

(And this is why I hate pastoralists/agrarians)

Those resource rich areas on the East Coast of North America were often hunting grounds, but equally in other places they might be good planting spots for horticulture/agriculture or (for pastoralists) grazing lands.

The point is that they have desired resources, generally subsistence resources.

“We can’t grow our way to a more sustainable economy” western Green pastoralists vs “watch me build a whole economy’s worth of nuclear power plants in a decade” Chinese carbon strategy
It’s funny that ‘all of the above energy policy’ was a conservative cop out when they didn’t want to commit to renewables but functional that’s what China committed to and it has worked pretty swimmingly

This makes sense. Trans People are nomadic pastoralists - while they have historically been valuable trading partners for sedentary agrarian cities, the advent of stirrups and their proficiency with horse archery made them a fearsome foe to urban areas from The Yellow River to the Pannonian Plain.
Trump: "We had transgender for everybody. Men in women's sports came ravaging through our cities."

Pastoralists have always hated predators that eat livestock whether that is goats or salmon.

*me, watching pastoralists lose out as their homelands are gradually settled*
They have absolutely no answer for Towns

And given that the Eden story (or at least Cain and Abel) likely has its origins in some way in the tension between nomadic pastoralists and settled agriculture, seems that we have likely been romanticizing thusly for quite a while!

By that’s also not the sole or necessary cause, pastoralists war all the time
August 26, 2026 at 2:20 PM
Idk man, a lot of nomadic pastoralists and hunter gatherers did/do a whole lot of exploitation.... like idk you can find evidence of prehistoric warfare and mass graves where one group just completely slaughtered another.

Now I am not saying that the existence of pastoralists is decisive to the violent/peaceful past debate per se.

Though it does seem notable that humanity has developed three subsistence systems and in the historical period, societies based on all three engage in at least some degree of warfare.

created a fake republic with incredibly fucked up politics. a party of left-wing veterans' groups, farmers, racists and religious radicals vs. the party of mercantile interests, urban professionals, ethnic minorities, and traditional pastoralists.

No one should claim carbon credits for aerated soils: there's no scientific justification for them. *And* no one should claim carbon credits at other people's expense. This project is wrong on so many levels. reddmonitor.substack.com/p/legal-vict...

In terms of frequency of violence the hierarchy is something like:

Nomadic Pastoralists > Stateless Sedentary > Nomadic Hunter-Gatherer > State

And in terms of scale and lethality of violence it's something like

State > Nomadic Pastoralists > Stateless Sedentary > Nomadic Hunter-Gatherer
