OMG this is just about as bad as the pbot staffer at a nhood association meeting a decade ago who said we couldn't put bike lane hats protection at a corner because people might run into them with their cars. 😣

Southwest Harvey Milk Street is filled with pride!

I recently joined Councilor Zimmerman for the grand reopening of the car-free Pride Plaza. Last year PBOT repaved the street and updated the curb ramps to be ADA-compliant, and this year they painted it and added furniture and planters.

It’s important to note, the 170 cameras that PBOT owns and operates, are not recording. These cameras are primarily used as a tool for engineers to support signal timing adjustments and maintenance response.

PBOT manages approximately 170 traffic cameras that provide engineers and maintenance staff with real-time video of Portland’s traffic conditions. With these cameras, engineers can analyze and monitor traffic conditions and even adjust signal timing directly from their desks and workstations.

Take a look behind the scenes at PBOT’s Traffic Operations Center! Engineering Supervisor for the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) team, Bikram, shows us how PBOT Traffic Engineers monitor traffic signals across town.

Wait did pbot suggest this? Can you tell me who?
October 5, 2026 at 6:21 AM
I suspect you can do this for stuff like a stop bar too, but pbot may not be happy with that so you'd want to be clear with them this is renegade members (neighbors also love stop bars).

Huh? My point is that having electeds with firsthand experience biking in the city, and how it can be uncomfortable is a great thing.

City council can do a lot of things. Fund infrastructure, pass ordinances, expand the tools PBOT can use etc.
October 4, 2026 at 8:50 PM
Yep. I mean the new ones are wide by comparison to others around the city but a 2 way protected bike lane could have mostly eliminated the risks you name. it’s a real tragedy this design was dismissed early on. PBOT has calcified a bias against 2-ways and we need to change that

There's a 40% jump in walk fatalities on Halloween compared to control days (10x increase in risk for little kids).

Block parties are a great idea
+ Halloween is an excellent night to avoid driving.

Your spooky season reminder that there is a ~40% jump in pedestrian fatalities on Halloween compared to control days (and a 10x increase in risk for little kids). Closing streets is a great idea. It’s also an excellent night to avoid driving if you can.

I remember a long time ago it being said that it was because the power companies didn't want the signals. Plus the new polls owned and maintained by PBOT can have extra features for signal timing and smart managing. Plus it's PBOT's pole not PGE/PacPower's pole.

Vision Zero traffic deaths are going the wrong way in 2026 after two years of declining numbers.

Notable increases from 2025 are twice as many motorcycle deaths and nearly twice as many PBOT street deaths.

Here's the Vision Zero dashboard.
