Senate Majority Leader John Thune says it "makes a lot of sense" for Lindsey Graham's sister to serve in the late senator's seat. President Trump earlier said he recommended the governor appoint her. https://cnn.it/3QOsUXy

This is personalism. It's the Charles I scenario -- the king rules without the a legislature and simply taxes and spends in whatever way he feels like.

Impeach, remove, disqualify.
Well that's not how appropriations work at all

Honestly glad we will have some visuals to illustrate the collapse of American government into North Korean levels of personalism

like this is the problem with the personalism of conservative evangelicals. people like piper basically view God as a very big person

combination of contemporary corporate personalism and belief that consequences aren't real
So is Palantir putting its entirely legacy into It Can Only Good Happen cause that letter is one of the most unhinged things I’ve ever seen a contractor publish

Not even in the top 500 most impeachable things that Trump has done in office, but I can't get over how he's defacing monuments to republican virtue in order to turn them into symbols of decadent personalism. Caligula-ass government.
no but this is crazy

personalism isn’t the right level of analysis. you have to assume instead that there are mini-trumps inside trump’s head warring for dominance

CEOs who say they want regulatory stability and the rule of law seem weirdly open to the instability and personalism of an authoritarian regime. Important read:
It's amazing that some corporate leaders are willing to support Trump for tax cuts and deregulation while shrugging about what Trump's threats to wreck democracy and the rule of law would do to the business climate. 1/

New piece from me:

Trump’s Shameless, Corrupt Wooing of Plutocrats Is Suddenly Backfiring
A media narrative has somehow taken hold that CEOs are stampeding toward Trump. The full story isn’t nearly so simple.

these are our pianos, not theirs! I know this stuff can feel secondary with all of the immediate pain this admin causes, but in the face of such personalism, it also feels important to assert the democratic principle that these cultural inheritances don't belong to the president, they belong to us

the way I see it is that Trumpism is a social formation built around far-right personalism with fascist/anti-liberal factions within it
(1) I agree Trump is not a totalitarian
(2) People in government and associated with the regime frequently speak as if they want to literally massacre political opponents
(3) a non-totalitarian regime can enact mass violence

watching agency social media accounts be turned into vehicles for personalism and/or outright white supremacy makes me simply want to take them off social media for good in january 2029
If you think there’s NOTHING in our heritage (or in any nation’s) to be unapologetic about, you’re a fool. A dangerous fool.

personalism while also dismantling the means of imposing personalism

I’m avowedly anti-personalism and would prefer closed-list elections but RCV is a hell of a lot better than what most places have and does a lot to disrupt the worst excesses of personalism (see: Lander/Mamdani cross endorsement)
honestly feel that RCV adoption should be wider
he also hasn’t won yet, but he has an impressive early showing. i have no dogs in this fight, i live in what often feels like an entirely different country, but it’s exciting to see RCV campaigning pay some of the results you’d hope for.

“Personalism is the enemy of rules-based or merit-based system for governing;”
New, from me:
Stepping back from the flood of news, I outline three ways to understand how Trump 2.0 is different from his first, or any prior, presidency: personalism, governing by fear, and purges. 🧵

I don't think the future of America is totalitarian rule, but I do think it's dysfunctional, corrupt, authoritarian personalism.
yeah, i am bullish about the near term (trump will fail) but bearish about american democracy generally. he has been wildly successful as a proof of concept demonstrating that you can essentially govern as king as long as you can threaten/bribe the elites using the executive toolbox.
