Ray meets Hemlock! He's kinda rude.
#WIPSnips #writing #phantomlear
Ray took out the letter from Shurgate, and handed it to her. “I have my own things to attend to, can you at least give this to that Hemlock when he comes in?” The barkeep smiled and took the letter. “Of course,” she said. She then proceeded to move over a foot and hand the letter to a man sitting just two seats away from where Ray stood. The man took it with an annoyed huff and crumpled it into a pocket. Ray was startled. How long had he been there? The man was big, Ray felt much smaller compared to him. He wore a long black coat, and had a wide-brimmed hat shading his face. She could just make out the glint of the reflection on the shades he wore. He seemed like a shadow with his long black hair covering his head. Ray didn’t know what to say. She turned her head back between the man and the witch, utterly hopeless. The barkeep let out a chuckle as she watched the reaper. The man, known as Hemlock, sighed with annoyance. “What do you want, kid?” He didn’t bother to look at her. Ray’s confused face turned to a frown. “You..?”

At the end of their trek came along large, stone doors towering high above them. Pieces of a chain that once locked the doors together laid on the ground, rusted and worn. The doors were open just a crack, and as they approached, a wicked air streamed in. Hemlock looked to Ray, who nodded. They carefully pushed open the doors, the rumbling echoing throughout the cold stone hall. A sense of dread washed over them in a hurricane, and the room before them lit up with old, nearly depleted candles. Ray looked up and saw a glint in the ceiling, bats hung in their sleep. The little creatures opened their curious eyes and flapped their wings, rushing through the air and out of the room. She watched and listened to them, their squeaks getting smaller the further they went.

After a heart-breaking discovery, we make another one.
#WIPSnips #writing #phantomlear
The butterfly flew up to Ray’s face, jittering about until Ray let out her hand for it to rest on. “Thank you…” she said. Hemlock stood up, offering to help Ray, and the butterfly took off, further into the mist. She watched it, and that same tugging pulled at her again. She gathered herself, and went after the butterfly. This time, Hemlock did nothing and watched her go, shaking his head. The mist was darkening into a void-like haze, and the tugging at Ray’s heart grew stronger. She kept the soul trinket close to her chest, not daring to put it away. The butterfly disappeared for a moment, its blue light fading. Ray kept moving, Hemlock’s quiet steps not far behind her. Her boots made a loud clack against the stones, and suddenly a dozen little blue butterflies lit up. The mist moved, swirling around something stiff. The butterflies illuminated a crowned figure. “Miss Helsing?” It spoke. “Have you finally returned?”

i kinda wanna change it a little but! for an ancient vampire, Varrick likes to dress accordingly to the current styles (so gothic victorian in this case) he likes being stylish but also able to blend in to get those unlucky victims

bit of lore today
#WIPSnips #writing #phantomlear
As they moved along, it became more obvious what Hemlock meant. The castle was empty, no stone left unturned. People had come and gone, desecrating the castle and leaving it to it’s bare bones. It was almost sad, in a way. The castle had once belonged the Kings of Atrium, before it was overridden by vampires and their lord. The demons infested the keep, claiming it for their own. No one could stop them, as King Lear III was mysteriously imprisoned in the Terminus Prison. He had become the King of Phantoms during his prime, but his power was unmatched by Dracula, whom most accused of putting him in his grave. Unlike the demon lord, however, Lear survived to this day.

Ray meets Mr. Shurgate and looks around his office... Huh i wonder what that is

#WIPSnips #writing #phantomlear
He gestured his hands for Ray to follow, and the reaper complied. They went up the stairs not far from the secretary desk, and down a hall with various doors. At the end of the hall was a set of double doors, to which Mr. Shurgate happily burst through. He invited Ray to sit at one of the plush seats. The office was big but cramped. Large bookshelves took up an entire wall, and the back was decorated by a large window with lavish curtains. There was a fireplace opposite of the bookshelves, glamored with pictures and candles. Mr. Shurgate’s desk was a mess, papers cluttered and books scattered, along with a grand typewriter at the center. Despite being clearly lived in, everything felt fresh and new. All except for a peculiar box sitting by the fireplace on the floor. Perhaps old keepsakes? Ray thought.

a prison taken by the scarlet plague

#WIPSnips #writing #phantomlear
The prison would be empty had it not been for the macabre decor of the scarlet flowers. Passing by cells, the flowers were most abundant where prisoners were once held. The bones of lost prisoners were adorned with the beautiful flowers, their corpses huddled in corners and curled up as they had awaited their inevitable death. Even among the forgotten armor of the guards did the flowers make their home.

Most side characters are named after villagers/npcs from. Animal Crossing. because i am unimaginative and its a big pool to pick from. some of those characters appearances might be vaguely inspired by their respective AC villager too.
