these are already weird enough, languriine erotylids are a secondary/reversal to phytophagy in an ancestrally mycophagous group! They're like the epilachnines of erotylids!

A new #RESSystematicEnt article presents the phylogeny & evolution of the family #Eurytomidae #(Hymenoptera: #Chalcidoidea) based on #UltraconservedElements

Secondary phytophagy evolved independently at least 7 times🔽

#iMMM2023 Katie Field standing in for Chris Bell you wasn’t able to attend in person to present his work on Phytophagy driving a plant-led reduction in sugar allocation to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi by host plants whilst lipid supply is maintained nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Despite not knowing the biology of many species as they are endophytic, our ancestral state reconstruction indicates that secondary phytophagy has evolved at least seven times within the subfamily Eurytominae, showcasing the evolutionary flexibility of these vastly understudied wasps.

The #Eurytomidae UCE phylogeny that I've been working on in the past few years is now out as a preprint. By using museum samples at NMNH and CIRAD, we generated the first global phylogeny of this diverse but poorly studied #Chalcidoidea family. 🧪
