#phytosaur
We need to stop calling things "crocodile-like" and start calling them "phytosaur-like" since they came along first

Two more amazing Triassic reptiles. In this case from the Late Triassic Keuper Group of Europe. The huge phytosaur Nicrosaurus kapfii and one of the earliest plesiosaurs, Rhaeticosaurus mertensi

Part of my book of Triassic Tetrapods (currently in preparation)

I realize I never really posted my work on the Triassic phytosaur skull at the Oertijdmuseum on here. So here (and in the posts below) are some photos. I finished it recently when I cleaned more of the mandible.

Any excuse to share this incredible reconstruction by @markwitton.bsky.social of the marine phytosaur Mystriosuchus steinbergeri, which our team described & named in 2019.

Reassembled a phytosaur humerus this week that I collected at @PetrifiedNPS in November in no fewer than a billion pieces of float. #FossilFriday #phytosaurfriday 🧪🦖

Happy #FossilFriday, check out this phytosaur skull being prepared! Phytosaurs slunk around waterways during the Late Triassic, likely snapping up any animals that ventured too close to the shoreline. (1/3)

i keep forgetting that phytosaurs are pseudosuchians which is so ridiculous because what else would you call this

For those who don't know I also prepare fossils, my work includes:

A lacrimal (skull bone/horn) of Allosaurus Big Al Two.

The most complete phytosaur head from Europe.

The only Metoposaurus skull with intact teeth.

For this #FossilFriday, I thought l'd share this photo of a Redondasaurus skeleton on display at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. While it looks like a #crocodile, it’s actually an ancient relative of theirs from the #Triassic - a #phytosaur.

Forgot to post this one a while ago-

Mystriosuchus!, any resemblance to crocodilians is purely convergent evolution

Btw, phytosaur taxonomy is a mess, many names don't mean anything, and we're in dire need of someone to clean up almost two centuries of taxonomic salad history😅
