In the 16th century, pikemen would often cut off part of the shaft of their 21' pikes because they were a pain in the ass to carry around. Every military manual of the time says to stop them from doing this, because if you run into a unit of pikemen that didn't cut their pikes, you're fucked.
Cosplay Commandants like Hegs only care about the "tip of the spear." They seem to forget that the tip is like 5% of the spear, and without the rest it is essentially unusable
