The pikemen are far too close together in the battle at the end of alatriste and one of the ways you can tell is the musketeers absolutely struggle to come up
Prompts a fun question: whats the most niche historical inaccuracy in a piece of work that annoys you

Not like 'oh they were referring to the wrong king' , more 'they had the wrong king on a banknote in one scene'
Why do book characters consistently have wildly anachronistic names.

Anne Hathaway is currently playing a Colleen Hoover character who is a women in her early 40s in the 2020s named *Verity Crawford*

Other media does not do this, if this was an original film she’d be called Lucy

I was just thinking about this yesterday, bikes and buses might be the pikemen on transit, but the train is the banner carrier of the transit army, the physical embodiment of the enterprise

Working on a retroclone of a 70s/80s chit-&-hex wargame with my rat fantasy/early modern setting. The numbers are meaningless for now, but I think these look appropriate for this era of published wargames. (The headwear isn't historical, minus the galloper's lobster pot & sword&buckler's secret.)

…Pikemen, but said Pikemen destroy anything on horseback, including commanders many levels above them.

Fun game with a lot of rock-paper-scissors charts to figure out and internalize.

Anyway, here’s a rare variant character portrait (Yelling Cherie), just because.

At this point I'm tempted to just use the standard vanilla game, but it would mean stuff like Pikemen would be useless seeing as they drop their pikes very early on into combat (unless I go into the files and delete their swords)

Command the new Pikemen! Trained at the Barracks, these specialized spear infantry deal triple damage to turn Cyclopes, Giants, and Wyverns into easy targets.

Biggest takeaway from this book is how easy it was to raise armies

"What did you do with your last set of Sottish pikemen?"

Oh, I got 4,000 massacred when I decided to fight a battle in a bog.

"Cool, sign me up!"
I'm reading a book about the War of the Roses. If I'm interpreting these family trees correctly, Musical Youth was right. They do pass the duchy on the left hand side

Balancing Pikemen against Archers is tough—one thrust can instantly wipe them out—but the interactions are great to watch.

SURPRISE DROP!

Inspired by Robert E. Howard's historical fiction, "The Lily & The Lion" tells the story of two knights on opposing sides of the Battle of the Golden Spurs in the Franco-Flemish war of the early 14th century.

More the latter! Pikemen, halberdiers, sword and buckler men all were paid more than the "shotte" side of things.

—foot soldiers all have Move 1, and higher-tech vehicles all have Move 3.

But there’s a story about someone who, not knowing this, thought that Tanks were too fast and modded the game to make them Move 2 instead… and was then shocked to see a regiment of Pikemen destroying battalions of Tanks.

Sooooooo funny story about that… the Pikemen have a bonus against mounted units, right? But as I understand it, Civ II didn’t have a “mounted” tag in the unit descriptions; it just gives Pikemen a bonus against any unit with Move 2, because that’s all the mounted units anyway—

In addition to the new tactics Neale invented a new kind of pike with a moveable pivot that a soldier could attach a bow onto. This allowed the pikemen to present his pike and fire a bow at the same time.

Realising his men needed support, Fairfax joined the ranks and led them in one final charge against the Royalist pikemen. This final charge was successful, and aided to the Parliamentarians overall victory.
