When people come with interest in OCIA I just ask them, totally open-ended, how they arrived at their curiosity. I hear amazing things. One recently mentioned the Epstein Files (i.e. the reality of evil) and another young man brought up Plotinus and Nabokov in the same sentence.

It’s basically like garbled Neoplatonism, if Plotinus was replaced by L. Ron Hubbard and had way more explicit antisemitism

For everything that looks to another is under spell to that: what we look to, draws us magically. Only the self-intent go free of magic. Hence every action has magic as its source, and the entire life of the practical man is a bewitchment....

But how are they expecting anyone to teach Plato and Plutarch without delving into Plotinus, Iamblichus and Proclus?

Don't give me The World of Forms or the Allegory of the Cave if you're not giving me ritual magic and theurgy, too.

Well there's one strand from Parmenides through Plato, Plotinus, Avicenna and so on which is looking for metaphysical principles to explain the universe and then people identify them with God because this town ain't big enough for the both of them

An update for our age with regard to Plotinus' insight that "it is not necessary for one who is reading to be consciously aware that he is reading – indeed, it is especially then that he reads intently". 🫠
"Words do not blast stim at the rate we enjoy today. Words are old, older than TikTok. Back then, a human would read, 'Fireworks exploded above two (or more) trad-attractive nudes copulating on a sandy beach,' and the reader would have to imagine that in their mind."

This outlines some of Plotinus’s Neoplatonic sense of profusion:

What is important in understanding Spinoza - imo - is how he developed a Degree-of-Being concept (taken from Plotinus perhaps through Augustine).
The Cone of Plotinus: Ontologies of Profusion and Particularization
I believe it is helpful when understanding how Plotinus viewed the degrees of Being, how the problem of how the production of the Many from the One is to be resolved (referred to here), it is helpf…

It's a matter of debate whether Plotinus ever met Origen of Alexandria. Imagine that meeting. The Platonic philosopher who detested his own body talking to a prelate who believed the divine light shone out in the body of a beaten & despised criminal. To be a fly on the wall of that particular stoa.

Plotinus pushes past Plato’s Good into a silence where being ends. It is Ein Sof before the first flicker; Lao Tzu’s nameless Tao. Stop climbing. Collapse into that One. Beyond Demiurge and ego, only an absolute, blinding stillness remains.

The stars are like letters that inscribe themselves at every moment in the sky. Everything in the world is full of signs. All events are coordinated. All things depend on each other. Everything breathes together.

Being is desirable because it is identical with Beauty, and Beauty is loved because it is Being. We ourselves possess Beauty when we are true to our own being; ugliness is in going over to another order; knowing ourselves, we are beautiful; in self-ignorance, we are ugly.

I submit that #Booksky A Tale of Two Cities is chock full of mummies recalled to life, and that one of the mummies is Plotinus. I don’t remember HOW I recognized Plotinus in it years ago. But Plato, I remember, I recognized as the plane tree in the courtyard. Other mummies are there too.

And this one, is more than just positing a common set of phrases in the air. #criticalbible #Plotinus is rifing on the same Platonic understanding that Paul was incorporating into Jewish Tradition to form Christianity, no? #booksky. Plato + TANAK = Christianity

Yesterday we read 2 Cor. 5 in church. It wraps up a discussion of Jesus a Divine mediator with, "so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 5:21. Reading Plotinus' discussion about the One, and how we are on a journey to reunite with it via a mediator is familiar. #booksky #plotinus
