Willowbank Wildlife reserve in Ōtautahi have a great initiative for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori: there are volunteers whom, if you name your favorite animal in Māori, you get a free coffee voucher thingy (don't worry- they have a list of animal names in case you're not sure). I said poaka kunekune ❤️

For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme #WorldOceansDay: any sea or river bird. Here is a collection of Bar-tailed Godwits, Red Knots and Poaka (Pied Stilts) we sighted in #NewZealand at the Miranda Shorebird Centre on the North Island.
Miranda is a world renowned site for migratory and endemic shorebirds. Miranda has recorded 131 bird species including 43 different types of wader birds. It is one hour south-east of Auckland. Here, we see a good number of Bar-tailed Godwits and Red Knots. Poaka (Pied Stilts) in flight and walking Bar-tailed Godwits

Finally a break from the oppressive overcast skies we've been under for actual weeks!! There was some especially beautiful lighting as the clouds finally broke in the evening a few days ago

Currently reading Cousins by Patricia Grace. There’s one line where she really emphasises how demonised te reo Māori once was in public spaces, especially in schools. She mixes very mundane te reo words with English profanity:

“There were words not allowed too — kai, taringa, piss, poaka, bugger”

pied stilt grows to a length of about 14 in (36 cm) with a wingspan of about 26.5 in (67 cm). The back of the head and neck, the back and the upper surfaces of the wings are glossy greenish-black. The undersides of the wings are plain black and the remainder of the plumage is white, apart from the tail feathers which are tinged with grey. The long, thin legs are pink and the toes have black claws. The long slender beak is black and the irises and the eyelids are red.[3]
