Sandflies? Please. The golden light at Pāuatahanui Inlet was worth every itchy bite. This pied stilt | poaka shot at sunset is proof!

For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme #WorldOceansDay: any sea or river bird. Here is a collection of Bar-tailed Godwits, Red Knots and Poaka (Pied Stilts) we sighted in #NewZealand at the Miranda Shorebird Centre on the North Island.
Yesterday we went a friend's exhibition in the Miranda Gallery and got to see Kuaka (Godwits) as a bonus.

Currently reading Cousins by Patricia Grace. There’s one line where she really emphasises how demonised te reo Māori once was in public spaces, especially in schools. She mixes very mundane te reo words with English profanity:
“There were words not allowed too — kai, taringa, piss, poaka, bugger”

The Poaka are not going to think it is racially motivated because they are built on a foundation of white supremacy. They would have to look in the mirror then.

Willowbank Wildlife reserve in Ōtautahi have a great initiative for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori: there are volunteers whom, if you name your favorite animal in Māori, you get a free coffee voucher thingy (don't worry- they have a list of animal names in case you're not sure). I said poaka kunekune ❤️

And here’s a poaka I photographed with long telephoto late last year (before I joined blue sky). This was taken at the Ahuriri estuary in Napier. I liked this pose with the wing beat and the water droplets dripping off the feet.
