Many pharmaceutical active ingredients can switch to PFAS-free alternatives
Certain medicines contain per- and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds, known as PFAS, which are causing increasing environmental harm due to their long-lasting effects. A report by the University of Freiburg, commissioned by the German Environment Agency, shows that many PFAS-based active ingredients used in medicines can be replaced by alternative active ingredients. Based on the findings of the report, doctors will in future be able to give preference to prescribing PFAS-free medicines, where this is appropriate from a therapeutic point of view. A large proportion of the PFAS-containing active pharmaceutical ingredients used in human and veterinary medicine could, in the long term, be replaced by PFAS-free alternatives. This is the conclusion of a report commissioned by the German Environment Agency (UBA) and produced by a research team led by Prof. Dr Michael Müller, a professor at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Freiburg. The study shows that, for 87 per cent of the identified human medicines and 65 per cent of the veterinary medicines containing PFAS structures, active ingredients without PFAS properties already exist for the same applications. The study examined 111 active pharmaceutical ingredients for human medicines and 28 for veterinary medicines that are classified as PFAS...

#PFAS are per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances. It's a huge group of several thousand synthetic industrial chemicals that don't occur in nature.

Nobody will starve without PFAS. Some people will just have to pay 3¢ more for their fast food, because Taco Bell had to come up with packaging that wasn't riddled with polyfluorinated toxins.

Organic produce doesn't innately cost appreciably more at scale. It's just getting people to buy it.

As the article states, these companies have just taken the strategy of putting 75 or 100 different polyfluorinated compounds into their mix, & they keep creating new ones all the time, because they know that government could never keep up studying & banning each one by one.

Polyfluorinated alkyls?

I lived in a city about...oh, 15 years ago now where graffiti started popping up in ranfom places saying "ban the pan". At the time it made as much sense as "who knows where dem nose goes" (which was my personal favourite random graffiti) but they were ahead of their time.

forever fluorinated
Polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) aka "forever chemicals" have been in the news a lot, as they are now being found just about everywhere including in animal and human tissues. So it was about time to do a feature about them, which is out now: **Forever problems** Current Biology Volume 35, Issue 4, 24 February 2025, Pages R125-R127 FREE access to full text and PDF download See also my Mastodon thread where I highlighted all CB features of 2025. The thread for 2024 is here . Firefighting foams containing PFAS have been used for decades. In locations with regular fire drills, the substances have accumulated in the environment. (Photo: Senior Airman Brett Clashman, US Air Force/Wikimedia Commons.) NB I love this photo to bits, but the things I learned about PFAS pollution produced by regular firefighting drills were downright scary. I mean I get that you make exceptions for its use in life or death situations, but apparently some places such as airports have saturated their environment by spreading the stuff every week in their drills.

PTFE in Cookware: Concerns and Emerging Alternatives
Tobias Gerfin from the Federation of the European Cookware, Cutlery & Houseware Industries (FEC) addresses key concerns about PTFE coatings in pans. He also examines promising alternatives under development. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has dominated non-stick cookware for decades. It satisfies most user needs and regulatory standards. However, PTFE falls under per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). Regulators aim to phase it out.
