❌ MYTH: Only close friends and family are affected by a suicide.

✔️ FACT: One single suicide touches on average 135 people - from friends to colleagues to strangers who saw themselves in the story.

Came across the word "postvention" and I want to stab something.

One of the pieces of my work that humbles me the most is alongside our local suicide pre- and postvention coordinators, where we have really frank conversations about the risk our communities face. There are so many people who care a lot and are working really hard to make things better

❌ MYTH: People bereaved by suicide don’t want to talk about the loved one they have lost.

✔️ FACT: Many do, but only when it feels safe. Saying their name helps us carry the love, not just the loss.

Suicide Postvention IS Suicide Prevention.

Suicide Prevention is an umbrella term.

To prevent suicide you need awareness/education, intervention, and postvention.

Let's talk traumatic grief support.

Huge collective trauma in courts and especially the juvenile court system. We need to find a better way to intervene. Postvention and “rehabilitation” aren’t working.

We talk lots about suicide prevention.

We talk far less about what happens after.

Grief, anger, confusion, love.

All existing at once.

Postvention matters, and so do the people living with the aftermath 💛🐦‍⬛

Psychological care offered after a death is known as “postvention.” It’s what the University of Toronto should have given its students after a string of suicides on campus. Instead, they were abandoned. Journalists Jadine Ngan and Tahmeed Shafiq explore: thewalrus.ca/death-on-campus/

Days like today remind me why I do this work 💛

People want to talk about suicide, they just need a safe space.

Curiosity, listening, and real stories open doors to empathy.

Postvention and prevention matter.

Every conversation helps switch the story, step by step.

Some places are meant to be ordinary.

The school run should be one of them.

But after Steve’s suicide, it became a place of impossible questions, hidden grief, and invisible burdens.

Read about it in article #30 ❤️‍🩹

I think I’m doing this in two posts, because one may be less appropriate to put with the other. Biggest fantasy in life would be to actually be able to work in the suicide postvention world. To help those who lost loved ones, maybe motivational speaking, all while Mekong money somehow.

We talk a lot about suicide prevention, far less about what happens after.

I joined Freddie Cocker on the #JustCheckingIn podcast to talk about life after losing my husband Steve to suicide, postvention, language, children, grief, and why healing is ongoing.

The authors argue (very well IMHO) that a) Most suicide theories lack developmental focus; b) Adolescent suicide trends may align with developmental phenomena; c) Risk factor research needs insights from resilience models; d) Prevention/postvention require a developmental lens. 2/3

Was just thinking this. They made it so we only respond to crisis with minimal postvention support and never enough resources - never investing in an ounce of prevention - in EVERY FUCKING DOMAIN.
