Going through some e-waste, I found some PowerComputing branded RAM from the Macintosh clone era:

Randomly reminiscing about old weird computers I used and loved … which ones are on your list?

Dusted off a Mac clone so that a friend’s daughter could run BeOS. Troubleshot some bad ram, then pulled ram out of different clone to bring it up to 32MB.

i remember that shortly after PowerComputing came out with the Game N Type but it just didn’t compare

Taught myself photoshop & illustrator (very poorly) back in 2001, on a PowerComputing Mac clone. That was the point I realized I had no actual interest in switching from physical media to digital.

Zero regrets.

I present you Brazil's Mac clone:
www.cultofmac.com/news/meet-un...

This was 100% legal in Brazil - and supposedly legal in the US as well, since it claimed to be reverse-engineered like Compaq did with IBM.

But Apple didn't even need to go to court, they just asked the US government to kill it.

IIRC the Austin office happened as a weir’s side effect of absorbing PowerComputing back in the 90s — it originally stayed around because they didn’t want to force the PCC employees to relocate!

It’s also kind of funny because Apple would still offer tech support for certain PowerComputing models up until like 2004 because they bought the company out; although they never officially supported anything above OS 8.

Were you a PowerComputing obsessed kid that played Kill Levitus Marathon and wonder if we could get a Kill Elon Marathon edition this time around.

If so, you might be entitled to compensation.

Thirty years ago the (very short) era of Mac clones began. My first "Power Mac" was a clone: a PowerComputing Power 120 that ran System 7.5.3 through Mac OS 8.5. Cloning the Mac was a disaster for Apple, but a wild time for users.

Three decades later, the legacy of Apple's weird decision is still with us.

Tbf the Mac clone program was pretty great for everyone EXCEPT Apple. PowerComputing stole all of Apple’s corporate clients and made a ton of money doing it, and then ended up being bought out by Apple when the program ended.

Age yourself with your first computer

It was a hand-me-down, but I got it at a fairly young age so it probably balances out

(Back in the Intel era I had a whole prepared spiel about how the coolest way to do this would be to revive the PowerComputing board for an ITX/ATX board that's basically Intel reference platform plus Apple special sauce ready for whatever components you want to add)
