DANEBURY CS14 C. 250 to I50 BCE (Built at Butser 2017) “This Roundhouse is based on evidence of stake built roundhouses, without any large timber posts, found in the archaeology at Danebury Hillfort in Hampshire. Willow was woven around upright hazel posts to create the walls and then the rafters were placed directly onto the wall before thatching with wheat straw. This very lightweight wall construction, without any substantial posts, has been a very useful experiment and we have been carefully monitoring to see how long such a structure lasts.” DANEBURY CS1 Circa 550-100 BC from Andover, Hampshire (built at Butser 2011) “The Danebury was chosen for reconstruction because of the unusual nature of its walls. It was built using vertical oak planks, rather than the more traditional wattle and daub. This is the first roundhouse to be built at Butser using this method! The walls of the house are made up of sixty oak planks joined together with handmade iron nails. Sheep fleece has been stuffed between the planks to stop the wind coming in. The archaeological plans above show the footprint of the Danebury. It is based on archaeologist Barry Cunliffe's excavation at Danebury Hill Fort, and is officially named 'Danebury CSl' in the archaeology report. The double set of post holes in the doorway of this house suggest it may have had sliding doors, so different methods were tested to create these. It was concluded they were not practical and were replaced with the doors you see today. These are made to swivel on vertical poles, and are more stable and easier to open than sliding doors.” Glastonbury Lake Village - 150BC As you can see from the map, Somerset, even today, is low laying, and floods readily in wet weather. During the late iron age, Britain went into a very wet period, which created the widespread wetlands across the Somerset Levels. The iron age peoples used two shingle banks at Meare for summer encampments, from which they harvested the resources. So rich was the area that they went to the trouble of building an artificial island a mile into the wetland. On that island a large number of houses were built, and for 100 years they lived an easy life, being very productive, and trading with the surrounding area. Eventually, the excess water started the growth of an extensive peat bog, which swamped, and covered the village. It lay invisible for 2,000 years. Arthur Bulleid, born in Glastonbury in 1862, was brought up with a strong interest in the past. He had heard of the discoveries of lake villages in Switzerland, and wondered if there were any in Britain. It took four years of searching before he spotted evidence in 1892. He excavated for six months a year until 1898, the rest of each year was spent working on the finds. The excavations revealed a triangular island of around two acres, with mounds of clay, being the remains of the floors of the houses. Because of the waterlogged conditions, a very large number of artefacts survived, bone, glass, pots, iron, and in particular, items of wood.
