Interesting that it mentions Taylor, Taylor & Hobson. Later known as Taylor-Hobson when they invented the profilometer, which they branded Talysurf, the first instrument to measure surface finish. Basically, it quantifies the smoothness or roughness of a surface. Essential for a machinist like me.

Well, if you're going to talk OS/2, then I did an entire surgical planning application with Pascal and OS/2. Also a laser profilometer for detecting corneal distortion after laser ablative keratoplasty, which I don't think they do anymore.

Using a 3D high-resolution 160 X profilometer, she was able to determine that 3 unsuccessful superficial attempts and 2 deeper ones were made by the surgeon before the leg was finally cut off… And all this without anaesthetic!

There are no shortages of people who claim they can rebuild your Porsche engine. It doesn't take a profilometer to see why this one was burning a 1-1.5 liters of oil in 100 km!

A profilometer isn't necessary to tell you this direct plated block was honed incorrectly. This engine had to be disassembled and block sent to us to have Nickies sleeves fitted to correct work done by another shop.
