When people refer to the statistical nature of learning, they are talking about projectability (generalization). There’s no getting away from the problem of induction, and probability is not a solution. I argued this point in a talk I gave at the Simons Institute: www.youtube.com/live/5tmyk5v...
so here's a counterargument to this: are we sure Miller is particularly good? He's slugging .379 in one of the easiest parks east of the Mississippi to hit in, the "projectability" just...doesn't seem to be getting there. Barely made our midseason 50 and we extensively talked about dropping him off
Here is my thing about the trade deadline for the Phillies. You can't spend a large pile of premium hitting prospects on players that are not core parts of your mid and long term vision. If you are trading Aidan Miller, in particular, you need to be getting back a player that is an important piece.

I think the issue is a popular conception of scientific predictability (really, projectability) that expects a level of regularity akin to the one underlying chemistry in junior high (eg hydrogen and oxygen in a 2:1 ratio plus a catalyst yields water). But social kinds are less global than that
