Trimma berumeni or Mikey’s golden pygmygoby, named after my former advisor and all around good guy, Mike Berumen. Glad to see more Red Sea gobies being described 😁

During #biodiversity surveys of offshore #reefs in the Farasan Banks region of the Saudi Arabian Red Sea, researchers discovered a distinctive, yellow-colored goby inhabiting cave systems at depths between 15–30 m. It is here described as a new species in the genus 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑚𝑎: doi.org/10.3897/zook...

Today feels like a good day to post a photo of my favorite fish: the Lantana pygmygoby (Trimma lantana). Described in 2003 and measuring in at a whopping 2.5cm when fully grown, they are arguably the most beautiful fish in the sea! 🥰 Feel free to try & convince me that they're not.

A small, thin red-orange fish with bright white rings around its eyes sits atop a golden-brown coral. The coral surface has a soft, wavy texture with evenly spaced horizontal ridges — like corduroy fabric. The goby is centered and looking forward, giving a close-up, detailed view of both the fish and the coral texture. • Ring-eye pygmy goby (Trimma benjamini) • Small, bright red-orange goby with distinct white rings around the eyes. • Common in Indo-Pacific coral reefs, often found perching on hard coral surfaces. 🪸 Coral: • Pachyseris sp. — often called elephant skin coral or corduroy coral. • Identified by its flattened, undulating plates with distinct horizontal ridges that look like corduroy fabric or elephant skin, rather than the winding grooves of brain corals. • These corals are common in shallow reef slopes and are favorite perching spots for small reef fish like gobies.
