I just had the most wonderful time at the Quantgen GRC in Italy with these lovely and brilliant people :) hope to see everyone again in Ventura for the next Quantgen GRC in 2 years time, and sooner on other occasions!

Took me a year (😱), but I finally published a blog post about our article on the #quantgen variance partition of phenitypic plasticity with @lmchev.bsky.social, published in @peercomjournal.bsky.social.

Question for evolutionary biologists. Am I missing something or are Fisher's geometric model and Simpson's adaptive landscape model exactly the same thing? And why has nobody said so? If you know a paper that makes this point even tangentially, pls let me know.

Have any #QuantGen folk tried fitting an animal model with the new covariance structure in glmmTMB? Intrigued at the prospect of fitting big models in seconds/minutes rather than days/weeks...

Today's Quan Gen Journal Club : a paper by @pdevillemereuil.bsky.social‬ & @lmchev.bsky.social that presents the new #Rpackage Reacnorm to partition phenotypic & genetic var in reaction norms - it was tough but worth it !

Less than a week to #wcpg2023, looking forward to seeing everyone there!

My lab is hiring postdocs to work on quantgen methods, EHR utilisation, disease heterogeneity and trajectories, if interested please email me, also happy to chat during the conference!

Our paper addresses a central question in quantgen: whether all genetic variants associated with a complex disease contribute additively to its liability as commonly assumed, or there exists sets of them that co-occur more in certain cases than expected under additivity. 2/n

For example, here's an old twitter thread dissecting how Cremieux/Lasker completely misunderstands a basic simulation I wrote on heritability & selection, which he uses to try and illustrate some inane argument about eugenics.

I say:

1) DNA as hereditary material was validated 80 yrs later hence knowledge about DNA was not required for Mendel

2) Occam's Razor suggests single causal mechanism of inheritance in 7 traits

3) Treat Mendelian genetics as special case of Hardy-Weinberg Eq and Fisher's 1918 model of quantgen.

Deep Quantgen philosophical question. Why not pronounce BLUPs “bloops” and BLUEs as “blueys”. Much more fun.

Using #quantgen, #commongarden, and #GWAS approaches, we find that urban and forest great tits do not differ (phenotypically or genetically) in their cognitive abilities related to inhibitory control, but show that cognitive variation may have a genetic basis.

Yes! I got into quantgen relatively recently (thanks to chandra jack’s talk) and was for separate reasons digging deeper into regressions and geometry. that combined learning somehow made popgen click in ways it didn’t earlier

I recently realized that some widely adopted assumptions & models in human quantgen can be deduced from the infinite-sites assumption + ARG. I guess it's time to update an old preprint.
