spring has sprung and the #dreamteam is out in the forest. first #geolocator robins have been spotted and data already secured - such exciting times. we use #lotek radiotelemetry and light and pressure loggers to understand partial #migration in a European #robin population in Northern Germany.

This summer, VCE Seasonal Biologist Kevin Dernier launched a project to understand how automated radiotelemetry can be used to study breeding behaviors in female Gray Catbirds.

Field Report: The Secret Lives of Catbirds: Uncovering Nesting Behavior with Tracking Technology | Vermont Center for Ecostudies
We're studying how we can track the behavior of these skulky, secretive birds. With luck and persistence, we may be able to piece together how the reproductive burden affects females season-to-season ...

My first professional biology job was as a bio tech at Don Edwards NWR doing radiotelemetry & nest searches for clapper rails. We got all over those salt ponds & the remnants of salt marsh that fringe them. Still counts as one of the trippiest places I’ve ever explored (& that’s saying something)
What weird, beautiful, and dystopian waters—full of urban effluent and old landfill and also rich with life

I had the privilege (and terrifying responsibility) to band 20 of those cool birds for a radiotelemetry project on what was then the San Francisco Bay NWR in the early ‘90s, when they were called the California clapper rail & thought to be restricted to that region. Only 400 were known to exist.
Ridgway’s rail! 🪶

This endangered species is easily heard in parts of the Bay Area, but very hard to see as they skulk in marsh grass. At Arrowhead Marsh, I’ve seen one just twice in 15 trips—fleetingly, at a distance.

But yesterday, because of the very high tide, long, clear sightings of FOUR.
