#ramial
these techniques need to be put in context.

ramial wood is used when you have ramial wood.
if you have a drum shredder, that would be better but most people don't have drum shredders.
some people have logs and no way to chip that works too.

i'd shy away from special properties of "techniques"

Clearing & chipping material is an ecological way to transform combustible forest debris into a valuable product. Also more practical than barging soil in and possibly introducing exotic seeds or microorganisms. 🌿

Austree Hybrid Willow is one of the fastest growing trees out there. These spring cuttings are already 8’ tall! Great for wet spots, coppicing, shade, habitat, ramial chips, fodder, & handy straight wood. A perfect alternative to bamboo as it doesn’t run and does not produce viable seeds #gardening

Awesome! Hoping to do something like this, have a little hedge of hybrid willow going, supposed to be one of the fastest regrowers for coppicing. Also saw this webinar from a UK farm where they are coppicing willow and spreading the ramial chips on their farm fields every 2-3 years. Infinite carbon

The small branches brought down by the recent episode of freezing rain are a gift from the trees. Chipped ramial wood is a fungi-friendly mulch with a better carbon to nitrogen ratio and more nutrients than regular wood chips. Thank you, trees!

These ramial chips were made from the small branches of a pecan felled by hurricane Helene. Ramial chips are valuable because they contain higher amounts of nutrients and break down quicker than regular woodchips. This makes them suitable for mulching without depleting the underlying soil.

Who else would get excited to see this in their driveway? And who knows the term for chips made from small branches, and why they’re considered valuable? 🌱

I only found out about the wood issue recently when reading about ramial (branch) wood chip being used as a soil improver. It makes sense if you think that trunks and larger branches mostly serve as a support framework and to pipe water up to the leaves.

Wood ash is only good if it's from smaller branches and twigs, same as with wood chip, so better from a bonfire than your fireplace (see ramial wood chip).
Tomato feed is probably easier to make than seaweed and may also appeal because it's potentially organic.

Ramial chipped wood composts beautifully when it's fresh.

The logs have been cut up into pretty manageable chunks and we will use them for edging beds.

I *do* have some older stuff I may donate to a local Scout group for fire purposes. I don't want to compost the big thorns.

@gnomeicide.bsky.social I'll check my field guides once I'm home but any idea on these? In compost I made of street leaves, tree surgeon ramial woodchips, coffee grounds and a bit of manure -- so they could be just about anything. White gills making me cautious. Smell of mushrooms.

I have also successfully used this method on a "compost heap" that was actually just a big pile of partially-rotted horse manure. Not quite as productive but still viable. In haven't tried it with pure ramial woodchips, because my friend is always trying to shift spent coffee grounds.
July 19, 2025 at 5:28 AM
I direct sowed these in still-warm compost heaps at the start of May, they are well ahead of everyone else's allotment squash too. Heaps are ramial woodchips (and I try to soak for 24h first but I only have so many soaking tubs), leaves, and spent coffee grounds. They get hot. I turn once or twice.
July 19, 2025 at 5:07 AM
Tangent -- oh, of course, ramial wood chips (an excellent hot composting ingredient).
July 3, 2025 at 7:58 AM
I know from my growing at the Near Allotment that if you lack manure, you can build a hot compost heap using ramial woodchips, fallen leaves, waste coffee grounds and whatever else -- and the squashes thrive in it. In fact it's helpful if it's still warm at sowing time.

More work, though.

Paul thinks we’re piling ramial wood chips here so he has a comfy nap place.

But this is our favorite way to improve soil on a slope. The mycelium will kick in and keep them from washing down.

Next year, we may plant true tea or a pollinator strip in this 10’ wide band between garden tiers. 🌱

Same here for us but Ramial does such GOOD ones. It makes us really happy to see them
March 29, 2025 at 1:38 AM
This does so many good things-

Makes use of debris that is a hard size to compost and keeps the nutrients on site- the small (ramial?)branches are rich in good stuff.

Provides hidey holes for small critters

Keeps mulch in place

Using this as a border in the yard proper is a great cue for care
