#rav1d
We created a safer AV1 decoder, rav1d, by forking the dav1d decoder and rewriting the C code in Rust. It works great except our Rust is 5% slower than the C. We're not sure why so we're offering a $20k bounty to figure it out and make the Rust code faster. www.memorysafety.org/blog/rav1d-p...
$20,000 rav1d AV1 Decoder Performance Bounty
In March of 2023 we announced that we were starting work on a safer high performance AV1 decoder called rav1d, written in Rust. We partnered with Immunant to do the engineering work. By September of 2...

okay i was 50/50 on actually trying to turn PoC patches into something to PR against rav1d but finding out that the ffmpeg twitter account has opinions on it and has opinions about there being rust code is deeply motivating
if you say your program is highly optimized but you have hot paths that include recursive calls with 16 arguments i should be able to fine you twelve dollars

Do you think Rust developers can close or eliminate the performance gap with the C-based cousin of the rav1d AV1 video decoder? #rust #coding #programming #opensource #developers #tech #news #technology
Rust developers offered $20k for rav1d to reach C performance
The folks behind Rust-based AV1 video decoder rav1d are looking for developers to get it running as fast as its C-based cousin, dav1d.

A very informative write-up of how you would squeeze out the last bits of performance out of a Rust port. Not sure if I’d ever apply this but I’m happy enough that I can mostly follow along.

"Improving performance of rav1d video decoder"

Optimizing video decoding is exciting. Improving the AV1 codec could help replace older, paid codecs. Free tech is better for everyone.

It remains true. Browse any high performance software's codebase. FFmpeg. dav1d/rav1d. LuaJIT. V8. OpenSSL. ring (Rust). OpenBLAS. Pretty much anything that needs to be max performance on CPU and has had enough development work ends up with assembly in its inner routines.

📰 $20K Bounty Offered for Optimizing Rust Code in Rav1d AV1 Decoder

💬 Performance vs. safety in Rust is a hot topic! A few percentage points cost for safety saddens the optimizers. ⚖️

In that optimization article a few days ago there was a paragraph about panic increasing fn sizes and causing regressions by preventing inlining. That’s what I’m basing it off of.

But if this is entirely standalone, then yeah, it shouldn’t matter I guess

Developers sought to optimize Rust-based AV1 video decoder rav1d to match C-based dav1d speed. With $20k incentive since March 2023, aiming at high-performance with Rust's safety features. Partnered with Immunant for enhancement. #AV1 #Rust https://www.developer-tech.com/news/rust-developers-offere…
