The Avco 7969 was an unusual, unflown late 50s USAF crewed spaceflight concept. Instead of retrorockets, it would use a steel mesh drag brake to slow the spaceraft for reentry. This had an advantage of saving weight and being simpler than a traditional retrorocket system.

the first time I landed on the Mun, I had a critical brain failure and instead of firing a retrorocket I deployed a parachute

I need to see Musk experiencing this kind of lesson in humility

Come in Planet Earth

This is Major Matt Mason from the Moon with today's #hyphenwar lesson.

There are no hyphens in words like: airlock, earthbound, launch pad, retrorocket, moonwalk, payload, spacesuit, ground control, extraterrestrial, or cosmic rays.

How's this for improvement? Compare my awkward 2011 attempt to draw a rocket fitting the concept of a "Retrorocket" (looking less like a rocket ship and more like a poorly-rendered jet fighter) and my recent attempt "Retro Rocket 2026".
The difference is like night and day!

Sometimes a girl has to fire a rocket into her own chest to meet the girl of her dreams.

This Broken Arrow at Ellsworth Air Force Base happened because an airman used a screwdriver instead of an insulated fuse puller while working on the security alarm control box, creating a short circuit that caused a retrorocket to fire.

Here is how the Department of Defense described this very serious nuclear weapons accident in its 1981 public report, “Narrative Summaries of Accidents Involving U.S. Nuclear Weapons, 1950-1980”: unredacted.com/wp-content/u...

A USAF investigation found “personnel error” was the primary cause of the accident (poorly-insulated or exposed wiring in the retrorocket was also a factor). Damage to the nosecone, missile, and silo was assessed at $234,349 (~ $2 million today). bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/rapidcityjou...
