What I remember is that it had a complete Surveyor lander on a mock lunar surface inside, complete with an ejected solid fuel retrorocket lying nearby (the only time I ever saw one). I don't remember a CSM at all.

Well, that, and the monorail running through the Bucky Dome. That was way cool.

How's this for improvement? Compare my awkward 2011 attempt to draw a rocket fitting the concept of a "Retrorocket" (looking less like a rocket ship and more like a poorly-rendered jet fighter) and my recent attempt "Retro Rocket 2026".
The difference is like night and day!

#OTD in 1967, Surveyor IV lunar lander was launched. After a flawless flight, radio signals ceased during the terminal-descent phase after main retrorocket ignition, 2.5 min before planned touchdown, on July 17. Contact with the spacecraft was never reestablished, and the mission was unsuccessful.

Our next GLXP team is Italia, an Italian team led by Amalia Ercoli-Finzi (Politecnico di Milano). Its spacecraft (both lander and rover) would be called Ascensio Machinae Ad Lunam Italica Arte (AMALIA), and might include one large rover or many small rovers […]

Love friends of the library book sales! I always find great scifi books.

But lately I also check the vintage kid's books. Today's was the best haul yet! Cool retro space books!

I’ve got a big giant complicated one to do soon that I’m working on but tonight I did a smallish one that I repainted (redrew the graphics for) because I didn’t wanna do Friendship 7. Every fucking modeler does Friendship 7. There were lots of capsules, pick a lesser known one ffs

the first time I landed on the Mun, I had a critical brain failure and instead of firing a retrorocket I deployed a parachute

I need to see Musk experiencing this kind of lesson in humility

A 3D printer-friendly recreation of of the Centuri PNC-89, the knockoff of the old MPC/AVI Mercury/Moon-Go space capsule with added on retrorocket pack improved by adding vent holes through the pretend nozzles of the main retros, and friend....

I always wonder why they called it a retrorocket rather than a separation or ejection motor. It's an odd use of 'retrorocket', which normally is used for motors that slow something down.

Unless the motor was mounted to the 3rd stage... Which does and doesn't make any sense.

A report for the Atomic Energy Commission faulted the Air Force for not involving the AEC in the warhead’s removal, noting “… an improper recovery procedure could have had serious consequences … [and] perhaps have placed the nuclear system in a more critical state.” nsarchive.gwu.edu/document/294...

A USAF investigation found “personnel error” was the primary cause of the accident (poorly-insulated or exposed wiring in the retrorocket was also a factor). Damage to the nosecone, missile, and silo was assessed at $234,349 (~ $2 million today). bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/rapidcityjou...

This Broken Arrow at Ellsworth Air Force Base happened because an airman used a screwdriver instead of an insulated fuse puller while working on the security alarm control box, creating a short circuit that caused a retrorocket to fire.
