6 / 23 A new specimen of Prototaxites from the Rhynie chert provided both of these things! The Rhynie chert is an early Devonian (410 million years old) from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and it is famous for the exquisite quality of its preservation.

17 / 23 The molecular fingerprints of organisms in the Rhynie chert were obtained using FTIR spectroscopy, and machine learning was used to analyses these data. This approach found that Prototaxites had a distinct molecular fingerprint from all other organisms in the Rhynie chert, including fungi.

Who’s ever seen a Rhynie Chert fossil like this? A Rhynia prepared by the late David Edwards, recently returned to us by his family.

At Rhynie the Picts built a huge city.

Excavations uncovered fortified enclosures, elite metalworking, Mediterranean wine amphorae, French glass and a Pictish cemetery.

Rhynie was no isolated backwater. It was a wealthy royal centre connected to a world far beyond Scotland.

I was very much looking forward to this #paleostream! The tranquil of the Devonian Rhynie Chert fascinated me for a while.
This geothermal wetland preserves some of the specimens of early landplants and is witness to the conquest of land by animals.

The massive stone wall of the Tap o' Noth Hillfort, near Rhynie in Aberdeenshire. Recent research suggests the fort is Pictish in date, and was occupied between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD. 📸 My own. #HillfortsWednesday #Picts #Aberdeenshire

As far as we know. But the rhynie eco system was probs locally relatively rich in carbon. It was also a hydrothermal setting so maybe chemisynthesis and/or chemosymbionts?

A 6ft Pictish stone engraved with a male figure holding a spear was found during construction work near McDiarmid Park, Perth, #OTD in 2017. The 6thC Tulloch Stone is reminiscent of two others found at Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, and Newton of Collessie, Fife. 📸Aberdeen University
