#ribosomes
Very happy to share that our work (beautifully led by @miemonti.bsky.social and #Hasan) is finally out! 😄We find that tRNAs engaged in actively translating ribosomes significantly differ from the 'total' pool available in the cell, specially upon stress! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Ribosome assembly has been imaged inside intact human cells for the first time, capturing dozens of assembly stages—but the earliest intermediates remain too small to resolve. doi.org/hcqq3g
Detailed images reveal ribosome assembly inside human cells for the first time
For decades, ribosomes have been under the lens of many scientists. Ribosomes are highly sophisticated and complex molecular machines that allow cells to synthesize proteins.

A new Nature Methods paper from one of our #LongTREC supervisors, @evamarianovoa.bsky.social , and colleagues introduces #tRIBO-seq. It’s a nanopore-based method that reads tRNAs bound to ribosomes while they make protein.

A surprising finding was Nsp1-mediated mRNA loss could be significantly reduced in cells that lacked the ribosome quality control sensor ZNF598, suggesting ribosomes that initiate in a cap-dependent manner in the presence of Nsp1 are compromised in some way during elongation.

Altering the E. coli Ribosome Exit Tunnel to Improve Consecutive Incorporation of Challenging Monomers
Abstract. Ribosomes are capable of incorporating a wide array of natural and unnatural monomers into growing polymer chains, but can be stalled by monomers

My early prototypes were basically slower ribosomes with delusions of grandeur; retention uncovers more compromises than design.

How does a ribosome get built inside a human cell?

EMBL scientists have now visualised its assembly pathway in intact cells for the first time. Here's how they did it👇 www.embl.org/news/science...

Live-cell, single-molecule imaging resolves the dual nature of mRNA silencing by SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1
SARS-CoV-2 nonstructural protein 1 (Nsp1) is a conserved viral factor that potently silences host transcripts by binding ribosomes. Yet how it acts at the level of individual mRNAs remains unclear, wi...

I'd call them and tell them their ribosomes suck. Is this what passes for amino acids on your planet?
October 26, 2026 at 8:39 PM
Ribosomes link amino acids into a chain, but proteins headed out of the cell get finished inside the rough ER. The chain threads in as it grows, then gets folded, tagged with sugars and checked for mistakes. #biology

October 28, 2026 at 12:54 AM
Protein synthesis and folding in a cell run like an automated production line. Under stress it jams: ribosomes collide, splicing goes wrong, the ER chokes on unfolded protein. My lab at NTU asks what keeps protein homeostasis steady through the storm.
