#risk-aversion
One thing you really see every day is the different risk appetites between MAGA-era Republicans and Democrats. Basically compulsive, reckless, dangerous constant risk-seeking, versus almost comical levels of risk-aversion.

I think this is right. It’s selecting on hyper risk aversion

a thought i’ll put out there: it is not the ideological moderation that is the electoral problem, it is that selecting for candidates who chase popular issue positions is necessarily selecting for candidates who exude the kind of focused-group affect that voters genuinely hate

Regarding munitions: The thing is, the US has plenty of munitions. Just not the high level standoff ones. Those are meant to hit high value targets then allow planes with cheaper munitions to come in. But he’s risk averse and only using the top level stuff for EVERY target.

Is risk aversion

Sen Gary Peters is in his own way the biggest embarrassment of the lot. He’s been a leader of Team Cave and he’s retiring. So there’s no politics or risk aversion. He wants to cave as a matter of genuine principle.

(never shading the artists btw, there's always studio exec risk aversion nonsense which makes these shows look like this)

you figured out expected values, you didn’t figure out risk aversion and risk acceptance

Apart from the non-American-made drones and the obvious issue of Hegseth looking fucking stupid… Shouldn’t a core part of the mission of the Department of Defense be risk aversion?
Trump regime official, and alcoholic, Pete Hegseth created a propaganda video touting "US products" while displaying Chinese made drones which he proceeded to attempt to pass off as "American made".

After everything Wisconsin Dems have been through over the last 15 years....a lot of risk aversion there.

All correct points. Important to understand that this is 100% self inflicted. Intentionally stoking inflation out of some weirdo tough guy need to impose tariffs, and create wildly high levels of uncertainty/risk aversion.
“The stars are aligned for a late monetary policy response."

Rising prices with slowing growth is a helluva problem for a central bank, which has to choose whether to focus on fighting inflation by keeping policy tight or on weakening labor markets by cutting.

"The resistance" by Heather Marsh

"The US needs to decommission their killionaire oligarchs before everything they know and love is destroyed. The extreme aversion to any kind of risk being seen in the US right now is perverse when the biggest risk lies in sitting still." #bindingchaos

one party is effectively run by 20-something edgelords so the lack of risk aversion tracks

The American economy isn’t built to think - it’s built to comply. Risk aversion is reshaping our politics, our education system, and our global standing. We’re raising a generation that’s optimized for survival, not innovation - and it’s costing us everything. kyla.substack.com/p/compliance...

This is like saying it’s rational to withdraw your money from your retirement account and put it in a jar under your bed, except worse. Technically that’s risk aversion, yes, but there is a point where risk aversion becomes basically irrational.
Setting aside payday loans, taking $50K in the original example is rational, if your goal is to minimize risk.

And that's a valid goal! Once you're old enough, a good financial advisor will advise you to sacrifice some of the expected value in your retirement portfolio purely to lower risk.

important to note that tariffs have their direct effects and then this kind of erratic clown show also throws a pall of uncertainty and risk aversion over the whole economy. that doesn't stop when the mood stabilizer kicks in.
BREAKING: US Commerce Secretary Lutnick has said: Trump may roll back Canada and Mexico tariffs tomorrow

Some of the most important lottery anomalies from the behavioral risk literature (e.g., probability weighting and loss aversion) actually have nothing to do with risk.

They also arise in perfectly deterministic settings.

I get why the Dems are solidifying the ticket on August 7; I actually think risk aversion when running against insurrectionists is merited.

But damn, I'm enjoying the VP auditions.

yeah racism and there's a special kind of political risk aversion that actually inflates risk

A recurrent theme throughout this war has been that Western decision-makers, driven by inherent risk aversion, are being pushed ever closer to a position where they will sooner or later have to accept tremendous risks to avert Ukrainian defeat and its catastrophic consequences.

it's not a rational assessment of the President's credibility, it's a function of risk aversion and portfolio constraints (specifically, an inability to stomach large losses and to a lesser extent light liquidity across all these markets)
