On Sunday evening in Kamloops, a 24-year-old woman is presumed to have drowned after her vehicle left the road near Schubert Drive and Birch Avenue and entered the North Thompson River. A 21-year-old passenger survived thanks to the quick action of three bystanders who jumped into the fast-moving water to assist. The vehicle floated briefly before becoming fully submerged, and rescuers were unable to reach the driver, who was swept farther downriver. Both the rescued passenger and one of the bystanders sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at Royal Inland Hospital. Kamloops Fire Department and Search and Rescue (SAR) personnel praised the bystanders for their courageous efforts. Search teams resumed operations Monday morning using drones, shoreline crews, and swiftwater rescuers. Visibility has been poor due to murky water from recent rainfall, and SAR also employed a 'live bait' technique, where a rescuer floats with the current to help locate the vehicle. Authorities noted the river was swollen from snowmelt, known as freshet, making conditions particularly dangerous.
