Roadcut bisecting Hubbard Park.

Roadcut rock sheeted with ice. Haddam to Route 9. Feels like rain (not snow) on the way.

We stopped at a spot to check for fossils in Kentucky. Instead, there were these iron-heavy nodules eroding out of a shale roadcut. I found several busted ones, but this one had pyrite inside! Hopefully some of the ones I collected will, too! #rockhounding

I'm bummed that they've covered up the roadcut where the 405 and the 5 meet.
I get that this is important for slope hazards, but that roadcut exposed part of the 1971 M6.6 San Fernando/Sylmar rupture!

Evidence of an ugly-big submarine landslide in the Permian: Blocks (some >5m long!) of gray reef limestone (shallow water) in deep-water (yellow/tan) sandstone of the Bell Canyon Fm.

In Santa Clarita on the Sierra Highway there is this one roadcut with a 1-2ft thick layer of a white material. I’ve been wondering for years what it is. It’s in the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene Saugus Formation, Sunshine Ranch member, but doesn’t match any other strata of it.

Hey, it’s the San Gabriel Fault, visible up near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Golden Valley in Santa Clarita.

The Sideling Hill roadcut in western Maryland is a textbook example of a syncline. Here the sedimentary rock bedding has been folded into a U-shape by compressive tectonic forces. The corresponding A-shaped anticlines on either side have been eroded away. I-68 west of Hancock Maryland, 02 Nov 2010.

photos of turbidites from the famous Peira Cava exposure of the Eocene Annot Sandstone (~40 km north of Nice, France) — these rocks are 'famous' because this is the area and formation where Arnold Bouma did his studies in the late 1950s/early 1960s ⚒️

Can concur. This is a very good roadcut about 90 minutes from me.

Drove by it a couple weeks ago.

It’s a very good roadcut.

I have some very similar examples from the roadcut at Waddell.

I pulled it from a roadcut on Sand Canyon Road/Little Tujunga Canyon Road near Santa Clarita (Los Angeles County).

I have sad reasons to review some nice book passages this week. Here’s one that always reminds me of being ridiculed for shouting “look at that rock!” far too often on many road trips…

If you find the right roadcut, you can see bikes on dikes.

Wonderful normal faults visible along a roadcut just outside of Moab. The structures are related to the emplacement and collapse of a salt diaper.

Nice photo. I need to plan a stop at that roadcut some day. Always in a rush to get to Black Rock (I do rocketry).

This #fossilfriday , I wanted to post a very classic Pittsburgh fossil. This is Fedexia striegeli. It’s known from only one specimen (shown here) that was collected during a geology field trip to a roadcut near Pittsburgh in 2004. I credit it as the specimen that made me interested in local verts!
