I was introduced to this poem in a high school English class, and found it again years later, and perhaps thought about it the whole time. From Robert Hayden's Collected Poems.

This Poem About Monet’s “Water Lilies” Reflects on the Powers and Limits of Art (Gift Article)

“Monet’s ‘Waterlilies,’” by Robert Hayden, reflects on what art can (and can’t) do in tumultuous times. Our critic A.O. Scott shows you why he loves it.

Hayden's 'Those Winter Sundays' — a tender, aching poem of paternal love, sacrifice, and the belated recognition of love's austere and lonely offices.

Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden

Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?

Naked, he lies in the blinded room
chainsmoking, cradled by drugs, by jazz
as never by any lover's cradling flesh.
