New preprint

When I started contributing to the field of dance neuroscience, there was only a case study on the neural impact of dance in Parkinson’s. Incredible to share our randomized, controlled trial with 57 participants using rsfMRI pre- and post-intervention.

Phosphorylated α-synuclein pS129 is found in aggregates that are pathological hallmarks of PD and DLB. The toxicity of pS129 has been up for debate for years. Combining LSM, MRI, rsfMRI and task fMRI, we demonstrate a toxic role for pS129 in synucleinopathies. 1/2

As cognitive neuroscientists we prefer task-based neuroimaging. Most lifespan and Alzheimer's studies are restricted to resting-state fMRI. Our Nature Reviews Neuroscience comment led by @loopyluppi.bsky.social discusses how to reveal cognitive states from rsfMRI

New preprint: 3+ years, 5,000+ initial sources -> 219 studies, 277 refs later our systematic review of rsfMRI after TBI is live.
Turns out many of the "inconsistent" findings in this literature aren't noise, signal emerges when organized by population and acuity.

The white coat effect: scanner edition!

Yet another ad for simultaneous physio monitoring. The sympathetic response during rsfMRI could be really useful. Luckily, there's a new method under dev: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42124623/ (I was working on a lower leg variant last week with BIOPAC.)

In-scanner thoughts contribute to resting-state functional connectivity pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42365014/ I've long thought that this is the "elephant in the room" of resting state #fMRI esp. for comparing groups. If two groups think & feel differently in the scanner, of course rsfMRI will differ!
June 28, 2026 at 1:46 PM
I think rsfMRI is perfectly valid, it's just overused. The problem is it's so easy - if you have 5 minutes spare scanner time you can just add it to any study.

Also, I bet rsfMRI differences between groups usually reflect differences in alertness and emotional state more than anything specific

1/ Neuromodulation — TMS, FUS, DBS, iES — works best when it targets each patient's own functional circuits, mapped via rsfMRI. But clinical use has been blocked by slow processing, weak robustness on clinical data, and no automated end-to-end targeting. UNITE solves all three.

This is awesome work, congrats!

I have a Q about the normatively of stim. Recent work has found (low-d) comm subspaces between regions. These may not be aligned with univariate stim response. Maybe rsFMRI is less uniform, and can align better with comm dims. Anything you could do to mitigate this?
