A sailboat on a grey flat calm Humber Estuary. Heads towards the huge chemical Refinery at Saltend. It's chimneys and cooling tower billowing out steam into the grey sky. See #alt-text #alttext for full description.

A sailboat on a still Humber Estuary. Heading towards the Saltend Chemical Refinery just outside Hull. Taken under a orangy early morning sky.

Cold air blowing off the Humber certainly blew the cobwebs away this morning. #Yorkshire #Sunrise

IMO, this takes the US in the wrong direction long-term in trying to stand up secure supply chains. These facilities need to be distributed across allies and partners not concentrated in the US. But US largesse is going to distort the market.

Bitterly cold today at Saltend. No sign of the Gannets and Little Auks seen yesterday.

Did see a Water Rail though, not normally found in this part of the patch, so that's nice.

103 Avocet and several flocks of Bar-tailed Godwits (and the odd Blackwit) gave some variety.

Rare Earths refinery at Saltend, Hull is over (nobody really surprised, environmental questions rehearsed by me endlessly on Twitter were never answered)

Spot the #Hull #Gannet (easier if you're on board the docked ferry!) - one of 20 we had - as well as seven Little Auks, from incidental obs 1130-1445 at Saltend while conducting other surveys. We're well upstream here, so it was pleasing to get some stormy seabird action...

Thought I'd have a nice walk to Saltend in the sun. Wasn't expecting the bitterly cold wind though.

Still, 3 new #patchworkchallenge ticks, including a singing Skylark that didn't care about the cold!

Short walk to Saltend added Bar-tailed Godwit to my #patchbirding list.

I'd already added Rook and Jackdaw today from my office window when a mixed corvid flock landed on the farm field opposite - actually not a very common sight in Paull!

Been so busy over the last couple of months I've not been able to be out locally much. So it was nice to have a couple of short lunchtime walks this week. Not a huge amount about, but a Porpoise in the Humber yesterday and and a #PWC2025 tick Shag today were nice to find.

What a great lunchtime walk to Saltend. Bright blue skies and very little wind. Picked up a few common NFY birds (but no Avocet strangely).

Absolute highlight though was this amazing view of a Water Rail. Best ever view of one on my patch - didn't even move when a dog ran past.

Had a walk up to Saltend today. Fieldfares still in the trees in the village, but Chiffchaffs singing away by the Haven. It's a fun time of year!

Finally added Peregrine and Avocet to the #pwc2024 list, good to get some 2 pointers on the board - it's been a bit of a struggle so far! #ukbirding

Foolishly went for a walk to Saltend at lunchtime, feel like it was the hottest point all week...

Anyway, not many birds about, but did come across this very cool (Cucumber?) Spider.
