It's hard to tell what's cause and what's effect, but Japanese family law/practices of adult adoption and muko-iri marriage mean that family businesses can be much more stable.

[Also it's easier to track continuity if there's a lot of immobile plant: onsen, pre-modern kitchen, mill, saltpan etc]
