Can't sleep thought I'd look at fancy armor
close helmet with grotesque face ("Schembart" visor), Germany or Italy, early 16th century and later. The skull of heavy make hammered from one piece with a shallow medial comb. Neck guard of two lames. Each side with nine holes for the ears. On the back a struck "GP". Later "Schembart" grotesque visor embossed with facial features. The bevor with a closure hook and surrounding lining rivets. Height 24 cm. Typical modified helmet for the Gioco del Ponte. Provenance: Collection of the royal dynasty of Hanover, Marienburg, auctioned at Sotheby's, October 2005

Mockery of doctors looking very serious while staring at flasks of urine seems to have been a common imagery theme, & thanks to your thread, I just went back & confirmed there are eyeglasses as well on the physician next to Andreas Osiander in this illustration of the 1539 Nuremberg Schembart. 🙏

A small number of similar painted helmets survive today. All appear to date to the early 1500s. The visors of these helmets are usually in the form of fiercely grimacing human or animal faces, known as Schembart visors after the masked revelers in the Schembartlaufen, the medieval Shrovetide parades. The city of Nuremberg was particularly famous for its Shrovetide parades that were often held in conjunction with a tournament in which the younger members of the city's patrician families, presumably sporting such helmets, participated.

Brant wasn't alone, Andreas Osiander had apparently been preaching against the horrors of backgammon, so illustrations of 1539 Nuremberg carnival floats show a figure dressed up as him holding a game board. He wasn't amused, protested to the council, & future carnival processions were banned! 😱 🎲
