The Youth Sports Industrial Complex is my own personal hobby horse for a lot of our current ills:
- Death of third spaces
- Radicalization of young men (idle hands, etc)
- Transphobia (Sports parents hysterically worried Emily is gonna lose a volleyball scholly)
- Fraying communities

One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kids’ résumés
NBC ran a piece where Mary Carrillo went to Norway to find out why they're so good at the Winter Olympics and i was yelling BECAUSE IT'S COLD THERE
then she went to a little tiny ski jump for kids and was like "it's free, equipment is provided, & they don't emphasize results"

- Most back pain resolves within 7-10 days. Don't panic!
- Walking 10 additional minutes per day can have dramatic positive effects on your health
- AAU and others don't increase your child's odds of getting a scholly; building evidence that specialization increases burnout

So UNLV’s club goalie allowed 6 goals on 101 SOGs? Someone give that kid a varsity scholly.
A few notes:
1. This was an exhibition game
2. They tied 6-6 (shootouts are meaningless to the NCAA)
3. Denver out-attempted UNLV 101-20
4. UNLV blew a 5-1 lead in the third period

UNLV’s club hockey team beat Denver, the best program in NCAA hockey, tonight in an exhibition. On the scale of upsets, this is basically the equivalent of a college basketball team beating an NBA team. It’s basically impossible.

D1 scholly in football here (academy). Get those grades. Freshman year cost me some opportunities in fancy northeast schools known more for academics.

Downthread I saw that Bama throws like $30K at all 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA and motherfucker I would have been the gumpiest gump if out of state schools were doing that in 1997. When we moved to MI before my senior year, I was too late for a lot of competitive MI scholly and the OOS boom hadn't started
