Many species of Selaginella (#Selaginellaceae) have two kinds of leaves (microphylls): Spreading, distichously arranged leaves and a second kind of leaf appressed to the stem. This is Selaginella picta. Classic #anisophylly! #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

It's a bit mucky when you get down to the level of this spike moss. It doesn't seem to mind and I quite like a bit of muck 🌱

For connoisseurs of seed-free plants (I know you’re out there), I present this little lovely: Selaginella arenicola (#Selaginellaceae). The epithet meets “sand dweller.” Very apropos. I never tire of running into this plant in the #Florida #Scrub. #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

We don't have direct evidence of iridescent plants from the Carboniferous, but we do have fossils of Selaginellaceae, and many modern species are iridescent.
I thinkI originally made this statement and incorrectly applied this to all Carbon. Lycopodiales, but it was probably still quite restricted.

The leaves of Selaginella willdenowii (#Selaginellaceae) are fantastically iridescent. In the right light, the vivid blue color is striking (but hard to photograph 😒). My photo doesn't do it justice. #TropicalBotany #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
