Something spooky is afoot near Lake Isabella! This week, our field team is investigating a mysterious outage at one of our seismic stations. The backup power checked out, but a lost connection may be to blame. The case is still open! #ShakeAlert #CalOES

EQ History: Oct 21, 1868: A M6.8 quake on the Hayward Fault, called the “Great San Francisco Earthquake” until 1906, inspired the first known earthquake early warning idea: sensors wired to an alarm bell in a city tower. Today we call it #ShakeAlert! ⚡#EQHistory By Unknown author - buff.ly/bX2t8EJ

Apparently this alert doesn’t go away unless you explicitly action it. I wonder how long I can go without doing that.

Reminder this is today: At 10:15am, BART staff will trigger our ShakeAlert early warning earthquake system to ensure it is functioning and working correctly. Once triggered, trains will automatically slow down to 27mph. Then all trains will come to a very brief stop.
BART will participate in the 2026 International ShakeOut Day earthquake drill on Thursday, October 15, to test our emergency response systems and to help raise public awareness of the importance of having a plan and being prepared.

Practice makes perfect! The students at Fremont High school have been well trained with regular drills to help them remain safe at school, and they can take those lessons home to their family! Great job everyone, and thank you having such an important event! #ShakeOut #CalOES #ShakeAlert #prepare

At precisely 10:16 am PDT, ShakeAlert sent my annual notification to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

It was an earthquake simulation drill to remind us what to do "If or when".

Practice establishes an automatic response. Invaluable in emergencies ❣️Lynn

BART is an early adopter of the ShakeAlert system, which is connected to a network of USGS seismic sensors throughout California. When the BART seismic condition threshold is reached is reached, the system sends a speed restriction command to trains.

People of California, (and Oregon and Washington!) you can install this earthquake alert app today, and participate in tomorrow's scheduled earthquake drill!

I have gotten an alert before I felt shaking.

How Calabasas residents get evacuation notices: Genesys Protect, county alerts and apps
LA County and city presenters explained evacuation zones mapped on a Genesys Protect platform, county opt‑in alerts and recommended apps (WatchDuty, PulsePoint, ShakeAlert), and advised NOAA SAME programming or county opt‑in to limit extraneous alerts.

#FieldPhotoFriday A little backup goes a long way! Connection issues kept our station near Cajon Pass from reliably supporting #ShakeAlert. Our field crew added satellite alongside cellular telemetry, keeping data flowing for quake detection and early warning. #CalOES

Next Thursday is The Great #ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. As soon as you feel shaking or get a ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning:

1️⃣DROP
2️⃣COVER
3️⃣HOLD ON!

Participating may look different to you based on your mobility needs.

Take a moment to review how you’ll prepare for ShakeOut next week!

ShakeAlert (which covers only the US West Coast for now) or something similar is the best that we can do.

There are no known consistent precursors to earthquakes at this time.
October 2, 2026 at 10:58 PM
Are there advancements in earthquake prediction or early warning detection beyond what already exists (i. e. ShakeAlert in the US) that you know of?
