The Snowy Sheathbills (Chionis albus) were very hard to find 😂😂😂 Apparently this is the only landbird native to the Antarctic continent. It looks like a chunky pigeon but it's actually a shorebird. #BirdingAntarctica #sheathbills #seabirds #shorebirds

There are nematodes and microscopic animals; there are skuas and sheathbills, which depending on who you talk to aren’t expressly marine creatures

Sheathbills (birdsoftheworld.org/bow/species/...) endure frigid Antarctic temperature behaviorally and with dense plumage, but they also have a layer of subcutaneous blubber that can be 1 cm thick.

At Bird Island, the team tagged over 400 snowy sheathbills – a species of bird whose population, behaviours and migratory movements are still a mystery to science 🕊️

The tags will help reveal population size and where they go on their travels...

Knowing what I know about the dietary habits of sheathbills, I'm with the people who named it that.

The data gathered will feed into research around the world. Each project adds valuable insight into how Antarctica is changing, and what that means for the global climate system.

On the Western archipelago, the retreating ice will leave behind rocky fjords and crags, with teeming wetlands serving as nurseries for plant diversification. These wetlands are a pressure-zone for coastal fish species to slowly adapt to and then colonize freshwater bodies. #spec-evo #worldbuilding

With so many empty niches in the Antarctic interior, it's inevitable that Penguins will try to fill them! Their solid bones allow them to outweigh and out-bully the sheathbills, but on land they are slow and clumsy. Freshwater varities abound. #specevo #speculativeevolution #digitalart

I can’t believe I only just learned about sheathbills yesterday, I love these things now. awful disgusting freak birds who are known for stealing food from baby penguins but only when they aren’t eating literal garbage

Elephant seal breeding season on Sea Lion Island can be violent as beachmasters are challenged. Blubber waves crash down their bodies with each impact. The fights result in bloody wounds attracting snowy sheathbills.

It was pretty amazing. The sheathbills were frequently absolutely filthy though.

Sheathbills, the most terrestrial of Antarctica's vertebrates, have the chance to fully exploit the many new and empty niches that will appear on the continent. Millennia of speciation lead to new genera such as the crane-like Maudisae and Palithikisae 🐤 #spec-evo #specevo #digitalart #worldbuilding

Yup! I was stationed at Palmer, and the icebreaker for the USAP leaves from Punta Arenas. I was sent down to draw these horrible little birds called Snowy Sheathbills that I love very much. They eat anything that would normally rot but just freezes there.
