As a bioinformatician, two zsh plugins became non-negotiable for me: zsh-autosuggestions (autocomplete from my command history) and zsh-syntax-highlighting (green = valid command, red = typo). Lifesavers for shell scripting!

What else in your terminal setup?

After taking a stab at learning some new languages, I honestly think the shell scripting realm is what I should pick up next as my second area to Python as it is very intertwined to the projects I am doing in Python.

If you run a Linux server, you already use Bash.

It is your shell and the scripting language behind most automation.

What Is Bash (Bourne Again Shell)? | xTom
Bash is the command-line shell and scripting language that runs behind most Linux (and more) systems and servers. Here's what it does, where it came from, and how to start using it.

What likely happened was a collation error with Excel. Also can happen when combining multiple CSV files together with shell scripting.

I admit that I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who knows very little about coding and basically does Advanced Shell Scripting but this bit really spoke to me because I feel a unique kind of elation when the electric rocks do the thing I want because I told it how to

it's a sense

I'm actively learning Linux Shell, Windows Powershell and Windows Batch scripting to create scripts in all 3 scripting languages that do the same thing when testing out the WxData CLI.

Admittedly, I need to get better at it, like learning a little more about the usual suspects (sed, awk, etc), and some fish shell scripting, but terminals are probably my favorite type of UI 😌

Windows broke RDP so bad on Sept 15th, I can't even enable it, the enable toggle auto switches off once I switch it on, no matter how much registry editing, service enabling or power shell scripting I do... They put out a hotfix patch but I applied it and that doesn't work either... what a joke.

My friends will think nothing of dropping $1200 on a Macbook so they can use GoogleDocs and scroll social media. But I, an intellectual, have only spent 20 years learning the ins and outs of Linux, distro hopping and shell scripting, so I can use GoogleDocs and scroll social media.

I’m trying some new introductions for the systems librarianship unit in my class:
-if you hate AI, you’ll love Unix command line!
-save the planet, learn shell scripting
-don’t want to use ChatGPT to make a pdf? Use ImageMagick.
-need to find something? That’s what grep is for.

That plus the way everything in linux is represented as a file on the file system makes shell scripting so powerful. Feels like you are part of the operating system :)

I think a pretty interesting facet of most command line shells is that their scripting capabilities are sort of an implicit emergent property of the functions offered by the shell and the ability to execute commands from a file. Like the scripts are just normal shell functions.

Beyond that, running interpreted FRL is intentional inefficient. It does a lot of index scans for variable names (read every index row until name is matched), and adds overhead to every command for output, history and things that make shell scripting easier.
