New IceBreakers for #Canada to be built in Canada by Canadian shipbuilders with Canadian steel.

Spivey: Many Local 8888 members have served in the armed forces themselves. Now, as shipbuilders, they serve in another way. We do vital work—and dangerous work. The USW helps ensure we return home safely…

Every worker, in every sector of the economy, deserves the same kind of union protection.

This is in fact a major challenge for shipbuilders in retaining new hires
And the ones that don't require advanced skills (like welding) tend to pay about the same as a retail or service job.

at what point does the white house decide to just start nationalizing shipbuilders to give to trump as a toy
Shipbuilding is so fucked right now that there’s no way we can move this beyond the design process in less than 5 years. It’ll be easy to get $100 million to study requirements or whatever for the big ship. The more interesting budget fight will be over the small/autonomous platforms.

Pete Hegseth stripped Harvey Milk’s name from a Navy ship and ordered reviews of ships named for Harriet Tubman, Cesar Chavez, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. All were proudly built by our San Diego shipbuilders. This is about political retaliation, not patriotic service. Hegseth’s conduct is disgraceful.

I had a great visit to USS Gerald R. Ford today with @markwarner.bsky.social er to thank its sailors for their service during a historic deployment, and the shipbuilders working to maintain the ship. The professionalism and dedication I saw today are why the U.S. Navy is the best in the world.
